Quelle main prodigieuse agissait dans le ciel le jour j’ai fait une nouvelle rencontre sonore et virtuelle : Joel Hoekstra..
.Un guitariste américain à la carrière déja bien remplie et influencée par les légendes toujours présentes dans nos mémoires que nous considérons comme immortelles ,les nouveaux noms se faisaient rares… mais il n’était pas encore venu jouer en France
Aussi quand il est possible de passer du virtuel au live ,sur un concert de Whitesnake à l’Olympia ,il faudrait être engluée dans du jus de marmotte pour ne pas courir chercher une place
Et espérer la faveur d’une interview.
Le 19 ,sous un soleil parisien radieux ,meeting avec le prodigue guitariste qui n’a cessé son ascension depuis son premier groupe vers l’âge de quinze ans,Trans Siberian Orchestra ,Night Ranger,Rock of Ice jusqu’à sa rencontre avec l’unique David Coverdale ..
Où es tu né ?
Je suis né dans la banlieue de Chicago .Mes parents sont des musiciens ,musique classique .J’ai commencé le piano à l’àge d’environ trois ans et le violon vers sept ans mais ne n’ai pas trop accroché …je ne joue plus trop de piano juste un peu …comme ça -ses doigts pianottent – la guitare à onze ans and… here we are !
Comment as tu rencontré Jack Blades le bassiste de Night Ranger?
Je l’ai rencontré sur le show World Stage :je connaissais Kelly Keagy par Jim Peterik je le voyais une ou deux fois par an quand on jouait sur cet événement ,on avait l’habitude de papoter et on a sympathisé
Tes Influences?
Ho man..j’en ai beaucoup !J’ai commencé par Angus Young ,au début de MTV ,la chaine ne diffusait que quelques vdos qui passaient tout le temps pour ceux qui étaient dans la musique rock J’ai acheté “Back to Black” en cassette tape , j’étais vraiment dedans et ensuite vraiment beaucoup dans le Heavy métal et rock ,ACDC,Black Sabbath,Ozzy Osbourne,Iron Maiden ,Scorpions.
Led Zeppelin ?
Led Zeppelin ,tu vois… parce qu’on était dans les années 80 /90 c’était les groupes comme Journey ,Foreigner ,Boston,et les groupes classic rock comme Pink Floyd,Doors …Quand j’étais môme j’aimais Yngwie Malmsteen tous les guitaristes mélodiques instrumentaux très populaires du moment Satriani ,Steve Vai ,Steve Morse(Dixie Dregs Deep Purple) tous ces mecs ont eu une influence sur moi.
Parle-moi de tes albums solo,
J’ai fait trois albums solo,plutôt instrumentaux

13 ,des morceaux acoustiques easy going que j’ai réalisé en 2007
Puis Joel Hoekstra’s 13 “Dying to live” mon “solo Project”que je n’ai pas appelé solo album parce que ça ne sonnait pas comme un album de guitares uniquement c’est vraiment vraiment beaucoup plus proche d’un groupe, l’astuce c’est que j’ai tout travaillé dessus ,les lyrics ,les mélodies, les melodies vocales et …la production j’ai pensé qu’il était plus approprié de le qualifier du nom de “Solo Project “.Il y a un superbe line up ,Vinny Appice ,Tony Franklin et deux des meilleurs actuels chanteurs du rock Russell Allen et Jeff Scott Soto (ex YMalmsteen ) sur le projet Trans Siberian Orchestra pour sa voix si mélodique..Dereck Sherinian a aussi fait un boulot fantastique en ajoutant de belles touches de keyboards sur tout l’album une sorte de touche finale.C’est la meilleure façon dont je puisse décrire la réalisation de “DYING TO LIVE”.
Comment as tu commencé à travailler avec David Coverdale sur “Purple album”
On s’était tous brièvement rencontrés quand Night Ranger avait fait une première partie d’un show de Whitesnake en 2013 je crois ,ensuite quand j’ai su que Doug Aldrich allait quitter Whitesnake j’ai texté des infos.Pour un moment c’est resté dans les nimbes puis j’ai su que des gens très respectés avançaient mon nom auprès de David ,Je les ai rejoint en studio en Mai pour se voir ,auditionner un peu et parler. J’ai joué un peu sur la pré production qui était déja avancée comme une sorte d’invité de dernier moment.Ca s’est très bien passé tant humainement que artistiquement et David m’a proposé de revenir en Aout et de jouer.J’étais trés enthousiaste et je m’entends très bien avec Reb .
David est très ouvert il aimait l’idée de reimaginer les morceaux ,leur donner une nouvelle peau ,les morceaux originaux sont construits autour d’une guitare.J’ai mis les muscles de ma flexibilité créative en action! beaucoup de spots ça et là en cherchant une autre texture un son,une empreinte pendant que Reb assurait les lignes originelles.On s’entend tous très bien avec un tel line up c’est franchement un vrai plaisir et fun .Comme tout job je veux donner le max de mes possibilités.

Tu es venu vers l’age de trois ans a Paris ?
Oui avec mes parents qui sont des musiciens de classique et tout ce dont je me rappelle c’est mon attirance pour les patisseries!
Si tu pars sur une ile déserte tu emporterais quoi ?
Court instant de reflexion ,voir déduction Joel fini par choisir une guitare acoustique, il complète par et beaucoup de cordes de rechange ! ( bien vu parce sur une ile déserte il n’y a pas de nucleaire power !)
Quels sont les éléments dont tu te sens le plus proche,Bois ,Air ,Water ,Feu .
Bon là il est carrément surpris ou il ne sait pas trop le but de ma question …

Et ça correspond totalement à la personne down to Earth ,chaleureuse,au sourire qui éclaire une journée (des journalistes l’appelent “le smily guitariste)qui nous venons rencontrer .
Concert de l’Olympia,
Bien sûr Il y a eu l’arrivée tant attendue de David Coverdale et sa génerosité avec le public,il laisse beaucoup d’espace à ses musiciens pour s’exprimer ,c’est rond ça tourne,et l’audience est de tout âges les fans de Deep Purple et de Whitesnake est en osmose totale avec le show , magie du partage.
Sur scène Joel irradie ,solaire il sait occupé l’espace scénique au bon moment ,interpelle et joue avec le public ,sa subtile et très parfaite maitrise de la six cordes,son jeu sont une flèche droit dans la cible.
.Son solo il développera une partie de son l’infini de son talent sur trois parties
A l’electrique comme un hommage à Gary Moore,Van Halen,Y. Malmsteen ,des postures naturelles à la structurées et élégantes son jeux sera puissant extremement mélodique parfaitement controlé ,
A l’acoustique il nous emmene sur une autre couleur: l’ intro d’un titre de son album “falling from the moon” suivi d’arpèges néo-classique qu’il a longtemps étudié dévoilera toute sa technique et sensibilité à ceux /celles qui méritent un tel cadeau et suivent le chemin de sa creativité et future grande carrière. Paris pourtant réputé pour etre un public difficile sera conquis sans réserve tant par sa dexterité que son feeling immense nous touchant en plein coeur.
Fin du concert et comme toujours dans ce cas , on aimerait que ça dure beaucoup plus longtemps ,pas envie de retourner à la réalité …garder le plus longtemps possible le cocon protecteur que donne l’évasion lors d’un excellent concert.

How did you meet bassist Jack Blades of Night Ranger on?
I met him on the show World Stage: I knew Kelly Keagy Jim Peterik I saw him once or twice a year when we played on this event, we used to chat and sympathized
Your influences?
Ho man..j’en very much! Led Zeppelin?
Led Zeppelin, you see … because we were in the years 80/90 it was groups like Journey, Foreigner, Boston, and classic rock bands like Pink Floyd, Doors … When I was a kid I loved Yngwie Malmsteen all popular melodic instrumental guitarist of the moment Satriani, Steve Vai, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs Deep Purple) all those guys have had an influence on me.
Tell me about your solo albums,
I made three solo albums, rather instrumental

Then Joel Hoekstra’s 13 “Dying to Live” my “Project solo” I have not called solo album because it did not sound like a guitar album is really only really much closer to a group, the trick is that I worked on it all, the lyrics, the melodies, vocal melodies and production … I thought it was more appropriate to qualify the name “Solo Project” .There is a superb line up, Vinny Appice, Tony Franklin and two of the best current singers of the rock Russell Allen and Jeff Scott Soto (ex YMalmsteen) on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra project his voice so mélodique..Dereck Sherinian also did a fantastic job by adding nice touches of keyboards on the whole album a kind of key finale.C’est the best way I can describe the realization of “DYING tO LIVE.”
How did you start working with David Coverdale on “Purple album”

Yes with my parents who are musicians from classical and all I remember is my attraction for pastries!
If you go on a desert island what you take with you?
