On this day in 1965, a young Jimi Hendrix was on the road touring with Little Richard as a member of his backing band—The Upsetters. While passing through Lafayette, Louisiana Jimi penned a postcard to his father James ‘Al’ Hendrix on stationery from the Holiday Inn (postmarked on January 25, 1965), which read:

“Dearest Dad – I received your letter while I was in Atlanta. I’m playing with Little Richard now. We’re going toward the west coast. We’re in Louisiana now but my address will be Los Angeles when I write again. Jimmy”

Contrary to popular belief—and the hundreds of posthumous album releases claiming otherwise—during Jimi’s tenure with Little Richard, he likely only participated in one recording session (circa mid-1965) which resulted in the singles “I Don’t Know What You’ve Got But It’s Got Me” (Parts 1 & 2) and “Dancing All Around The World” [aka “Dance A Go Go”] for the Vee-Jay record company. Both of these recordings were re-issued as part of the 2010 box set, WEST COAST SEATTLE BOY.
