Image of the Year, supported by AFP: A Day for Peace Through Sport
This photography, taken by Emmanuel Dunant, was taken on 23 August 2013 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It shows Jacques Rogge, Vuk Jeremic and Novak Djokovic after the historic decision to proclaim 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
Emmanuel Dunant declared: “I want to thank the Jury for this award. This photography shows that elite athletes can and must encompass their professional environment to contribute to the progress of universal values. The popularity of a champion, won by his or her performances and under strong discipline, can only serve to spread a positive message. The presence of Novak Djokovic, swapping his shirt and shorts for a suit, underlines how important it is to have athletes help raising awareness on sport as a tool to sustainable peace.”
