Todd Londagin
« Look Out For Love »
(Self Produced)
Street Date January 29, 2013
Todd Londagin-vocals, trombone, PETE SMITH-guitar, DAVID BERGER-drums,
MATT RAY-piano, JENNIFER VINCENT-bassFor anyone who loves joyful, unpretentious, but highly creative and spontaneous jazz, Todd Londagin’s new album Look Out For Love will be a delightful discovery. The vocalist/trombonist’s music is a vivid reflection of his personal roots.  Growing up playing music and street busking in an itinerant, alternative-lifestyle family, he lived in buses, cars, homemade boats or tents, traveling throughout the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Europe. Home-schooled and with no formal musical training, Todd honed his skills the old-style way through influences like Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, early Sinatra and New Orleans traditional jazz, especially Jack Teagarden (one of the few other trombonist/vocalists in jazz) and later, J.J. Johnson.
All of these diverse elements of musical experience have been brought together in a most refreshing, unfettered manner, and are fully evident on Look Out For Love.  In the company of four longstanding musical cohorts, Todd has assembled a repertoire of 10 songs, culled from the Great American Songbook and popular songs, each developed in a most organic fashion by the musicians involved. In testimony to the great jazz tradition of spontaneous creativity, each song sounds as if it was deftly arranged to deliver its story in a planned fashion.  But in truth, the songs were developed by the musicians in the studio in the best “home-cooking” style.
Part of this is due to the longevity of the musical relationships involved.  Bassist Jennifer Vincent and drummer David Berger have been playing with Todd since the early 1990s (all three were original members of the successful ‘90s band, The Flying Neutrinos); while pianist Matt Ray and guitarist Pete Smith have been performing with Todd since 2000.  Together, they artfully and lovingly developed each piece like an assortment of delicious dishes combined together for a cohesive feast.  As Todd explains,“each tune is an exercise in doing things in a different way.”
Reflecting the joyous abandon of the leader’s freewheeling upbringing, a full palette of styles is employed on the album, from the 1920s style of the bouncily up-tempo Some of These Days (a tune Londagin has played since boyhood) to the samba of Brazil.  With Matt adding glockenspiel and in the company of special guest Ms. Toby Williams joining in on the vocals, Brazil is a playfully romping item that surges in a controlled frenzy and is highlighted by Toby and Todd’s interwoven vocals on the way out.
Two tracks are guitar-less.  Pennies From Heaven is a smoothly mid-tempo swinger with Todd’s vocals sandwiched between two trombone solos and a two-fisted piano solo, all cushioned by Vincent’s brightly walking bass and Berger’s dynamic drumming.  You Go to My Head is a tender ballad featuring Todd’s clear, smooth vocals, perfectly ensconced in the setting fashioned by a most sympathetic rhythm section.
Beautiful balladry is also on tap with Cole Porter’s classic I Concentrate on You – a version known among singers as the “Sinatra changes.”  A lush piano intro sets the stage for Londagin’s sultry, evocative vocal, and the piece flirts with a delicious bossa nova groove in most organic fashion, nicely supported by the warm wood of Vincent’s bass.
Unabashed swing is definitely a consistent mood throughout the CD.  The title track Look Out For Love opens the album in jaunty style with nicely syncopated rhythms and a sparkling guitar solo.  A playful guitar/piano descending patterned vamp sets off Long Ago & Far Away, a brightly swinging piece with fine solos by Ray and Smith, and a vividly burning trombone solo.  Bye Bye Baby’s easy groove is nicely colored by tasteful trombone overdubs in the intro to Todd’s vocal.  An emphatic trombone solo, a vibrant bass turn and a short trading of fours between guitar and drums are highlights before the piece is ushered out on the wings of a trombone choir.
Additional subtle overdubs are used brilliantly in the production, only occasionally, and always to great effect.  The two closing tracks are perfect examples – and also take the album into a new and provocative territory. Stevie Wonder’s I Can’t Help It is a powerfully swinging, highly infectious piece built on nicely syncopated suspended rhythms.  Overdubbed vocals are most effective, and the song has a markedly modern feel that is both compelling and exciting. The album’s closer, Bust Your Windows, offers the greatest departure from the rest of the album.  The rubato opening sets the tone for a moody, dramatic journey – artfully constructed and filled with angular modality and emotional gravity.  The piece builds in intensity, slowly burning its way forward to its climax and going out in a gentle denouement. (The highly respected vocal contractor and back-up singer Gregory Clark provided significant influence on these last two pieces, but sadly passed away shortly after this album was recorded.)
Not enough can be said about the tremendous musicianship that went into this album.  The empathy and commitment of everyone to the overall vision is extraordinary and has truly produced a labor of love that not only has resulted in a very special album, but portends great things to come.

New Release:
Adam Smale
“Out of the Blue”Featuring
Adam Smale – guitar Phil Palombi – bass
Mathew Fries – piano Kieth Hall – drums

(SBM3-2)
Street Date March 4, 2014

One of the key elements of jazz mastery is the ability of the artist to tell stories through music; an art that many feel has been lost amidst too much focus on technical prowess.  The remarkable guitarist Adam Smale indeed has stories to tell, as fully evidenced by his outstanding new CD, Out of the Blue.  Like an anthology of short stories all connected by the vision of its author, Out of the Blue offers nine rich, perfectly plotted tales for the enjoyment and edification of its audience. To weave his fascinating stories, Adam brings two formidable components to the table – his own virtuosic mastery of his 7-string guitar honed by the influence of a diverse array of brilliant guitarists; and a supporting cast of musicians who not only understand the nature of the narratives they’ve been entrusted to help depict, but also dedicate themselves to the vision of their creative source.

Unequivocally naming the legendary Lenny Breau as his most profound influence, Adam also cites a broad array of other string masters including Chet Atkins, Albert Lee, Eddie Van Halen, Flatt & Scruggs, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, Tal Farlow, Jim Hall, John Scofield and Kurt Rosenwinkel.  Add in Charlie Parker and Bill Evans……and a most stimulating brew results.  Applying all of this to his personally designed electric and acoustic 7-string guitars with his fingerstyle technique, and a most unique new talent in the jazz guitar world has emerged.

But jazz is in essence an ensemble form, requiring both a dedicated commitment and a truly sympathetic understanding to achieve the synergy the music demands.  To achieve that goal Adam selected pianist Mathew Fries, bassist Phil Palombi and drummer Keith Hall – a working trio known as Tri-Fi – knowing that their 10-year history together would bring the proper depth and wisdom to his initial CD as a leader.  The empathy and interplay are consistently in focus – punctuating, driving, grooving or simply swinging, the enhancement and projection of Smale’s overall vision is always the driving force.

While there are solo features for everyone – and always delivered beautifully – this is the guitarist’s album. His solos are perfectly constructed, drawing upon his full palette of resources in the most appropriate manner.   Each solo displays this diversity, never in a contrived fashion, but rather blending the various elements into a fully cohesive statement.
Eight of the nine compositions are Smale originals, similarly displaying the range of his musical vision, but connected by his conceptual unity.  The one non-Smale piece is Wayne Shorter’s Yes and No, reharmonized and constructed in a manner that stretches the original version, changing tempos even more daringly to create an ever-shifting environment – from fiery to elegant – for the dynamic improvisational explorations of Smale and Fries.

The quartet tracks are bookended by two pieces featuring Adam accompanied only by bass and drums. New Start opens the album with a call-and-response structure akin to a rapid-fire version of Miles’ classic So What – an ideal setting for Smale’s fluid fingerstyle approach with interval leaps that are almost Dolphy-esque. The album’s closer Original Sin is another scorcher based on the changes of Cole Porter’s What Is This Thing Called Love, displaying Smale’s chord-melody mastery in a vividly exciting solo built on heavily suspended rhythms.
Two more pieces are in a similar up-tempo mode.  Autumn Confirmation is a playful take on Bird’s classic Confirmation over the changes to Autumn Leaves.  What was initially conceived as an exercise is transformed into a foray of Bebop urgency with blistering guitar, a surging bass solo, an appropriately Bud Powell-ish turn by Fries, and a boisterous trading of fours between guitar and drums. NYC Love Affair – a tribute to the Canadian-born guitarist’s adopted hometown since 2009 – is an intricately smoking swinger with two-fisted Fries and switchblade edgy articulation by the guitarist.

At the other end of the spectrum, She Knows Me is a tender ballad that allows Smale to utilize Breau’s signature bell-like harmonics in a solo of filigreed delicacy.
Blues to Yous is an easy loper in angular lyricism with tantalizing, slightly behind-the-beat guitar solo, smoothly swinging piano and warmly grooved bass.
Jazzenco deftly touches on Flamenco stylings, but also develops in a fugue-like construction, with fine solos by all.  Smale explores the full range of his acoustic guitar while touching on the full palette of his stylistic arsenal.

But of all the tales told in this delightful album, the most viscerally visual isNight Drive.  A dramatic, rhythmically insistent and tension-filled piece, it unfolds with the powerful imagery and compelling complexity of a film noir, with Fries’ dynamic piano and Adam’s effective use of distortion stating the narrative, edgily stoked by Palombi and Hall.

Out of the Blue is a brilliant U.S. debut album by an extraordinary guitarist/composer who is destined to take his place in the front ranks of the contemporary jazz scene.

 JC Stylles
releases pioneering new
iPad Magazine

Musicians today, and those associated within the industry have seen so much change in the music business, that many are left  guessing how to reconfigure the business model effectively moving forward.
The traditional platforms that have disappeared have left many scratching their heads as the floor fell away, to be replaced by new platforms that seemingly offered great new opportunities of distribution on the one hand, but evidently unfair compensation for the musician is the reality on the other and trying to rectify the imbalance today is like searching for the Holy Grail.
So as a step in the right direction, it is refreshing to see more musicians putting on their entrepreneurial caps, (which would seem logical since they are after all living in the creative zone much of the time) and actually taking action to contribute to new methods of reaching an audience, in an effort to be  fairly compensated.
Motema recording artist JC Stylles is one of the new breed of entrepreneurial musicians to recently emerge and take up the fight, with his new release on the Apple Newstand for his pioneering iPad Magazine “Taste Hear Feel New York-with JC Stylles”.
The magazine available for iPad users reaches a gloabal and broad audience base by incorporating  three of New York’s predominant sub cultures in jazz, art, and food  equally, and appeals to anyone  who has a love or connection with the  New York experience. The benefit of the iPad magazine platform also allows a multi-media experience for the reader, with live video interviews, as well as the written word, making it a part magazine and part TV-like experience , and allows other notable talent to be presented worldwide to an audience who may otherwise not be reached.
It is a subscription based model which includes 6 bi-monthly editions for the one time price of $14.99.
