Blues Blogger from Russia reviews Crawlin’ Kingsnake.
Olegs’s Blues Blog (Russia)
June 14, 2024
English translation:
Eleven years ago, John Primer (79) and Bob Corritore (67) began their collaboration. This spring they released their fourth album together with the brand new ‘Crawlin’ Kingsnake’. During these 11 years, both elderly gentlemen won many awards in the field of blues, and now they have recorded an old-school blues disc.
It has eleven covers and one song written by John Primer (« Hiding Place »). The album begins with the track « Take A Message », which immediately makes us understand what awaits us. Two blues electric guitars, John’s warm Mississippi voice, and Bob making the most of his harmonica.
Next is John Lee Hooker’s « Crawlin’ Kingsnake », followed by Willie Dixon’s « Down In The Bottom ». The album included three covers of Muddy Waters, including the dynamic track « Stuff You Gonna Watch » and « Rosalee Blues », a slow blues starring Anthony Geraci on piano. « Gravel Road » and « Feel Like Going Home » complete the traditional blues album.
Both Primer and Corritore are at the peak of their careers: Primer was recently inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, as well as receiving numerous awards and a Grammy nomination. Likewise, Corritore has been active in European festivals, releasing five critically acclaimed albums in 2023, being the subject of numerous articles, receiving numerous nominations, and even winning in some places.
The band sounds like Muddy Waters’ band in its heyday, and with its playing it proves once again (or tries to prove) that such blues will always exist. At least, with this album they completely convinced me!

Also this great review from Concert Monkey from Belgium just in!
Here is the summary translated to English:
« Primer’s lived-in voice and compelling guitar playing form a perfect combination with Corritore’s virtuoso harmonica. Together they create a dynamic that is both raw and refined, bringing each track on ‘Crawlin’ Kingsnake’ to life with an undeniable energy. Their interplay is intuitive and compelling, and it is clear that these two musicians have a deep respect for the traditions of the blues. Add to that the excellent musicians they managed to surround themselves with and you know that ‘Crawlin’ Kingsnake’ is a more than excellent album. It wouldn’t surprise me if ‘Crawlin’ Kingsnake’ by John Primer & Bob Corritore is nominated for the Blues Music Awards as best traditional album of the year. » (9/10)

VIZZTONE LABEL GROUP TO RELEASE NEW BOB CORRITORE & FRIENDS ALBUM, “PHOENIX BLUES RUMBLE”, DECEMBER 1, 2023
BOSTON, MA – VizzTone is proud to announce the September 29 release of PHOENIX BLUES RUMBLE, Bob Corritore’slatest “From The Vaults” album culled from his vast archives.
PHOENIX BLUES RUMBLE is a showcase of the artists from Bob Corritore’s adopted home town of Phoenix, Arizona. Recorded between 1987 and 2017, it’s a peek into a Southwest US community that has spawned a powerful blues scene.
Blues harp player Bob Corritore moved from Chicago to Phoenix in 1981, and it quickly became a Blues hub. Bob played with local bluesmen Tommy Dukes, Chief Schabuttie Gilliame, Big Pete Pearson and Dino Spells, and persuaded his Chicago friend Chico Chism to move to town. Corritore started his long-running radio show, “Those Lowdown Blues” on KJZZ in 1984 – It’s about to celebrate its 49th Anniversary – and he opened the Rhythm Room music club and started bringing blues artists to Phoenix for performances and recording sessions. Those many sessions were to become the fertile ground for his “From the Vaults” album series. Before long Sugaray Rayfordmoved nearby. Behold the power of Phoenix Blues!
The first single features Hattiesburg, MS native Tommy Dukes, who relocated to Arizona in the mid-1950s and has been a prominent blues force in the area ever since. Bob Corritore met Tommy the first week he arrived in Phoenix in 1981, and over the years they’ve maintained a great friendship and worked numerous shows together. Tommy reactivates his childhood blues inspiration by playing in the Jimmy Reed style on his original composition, “Real Bad Day.” Tommy’s relaxed vocals and groovin’ guitar provide the foil for Corritore’s straight-ahead harmonica playing on this real deal blues.

RIP Tail Dragger. September 30, 1940 – September 4, 2023.
It’s hard to say goodbye to somebody who has been a constant presence in the Chicago blue scene for many decades. James Yancey Jones, also known as Tail Dragger performed his heavy duty, Howlin’ Wolf inspired blues around Chicago and around the world since the 1970s. His band was also a training ground for so many aspiring artists who came to know the real Blues by playing with this master. He was a fun-loving, rowdy-making character with a rough exterior, an outspoken persona, a kind and loyal friend, and a street-wise teacher. Bob Corritore first met Tail Dragger in 1976, the day after Howlin’ Wolf died. All of the musicians that loved Howlin’ Wolf gathered at the club that Wolf used to play at on the West Side – Eddie Shaw’s 1815 club. Bob Corritore did not realize at that moment that this larger than life character would become a lifelong friend and they made recordings together, toured all over the world and shared many smiles. This was not an exclusive situation in any way, because Tail Dragger made friends and musical associates wherever he went. But when you were in with Tail Dragger, you became part of his entrusted team. Here are a selection of photos from Bob’s collection of some really great times had. He will be greatly missed and there is nobody that could possibly ever replace him.

VizzTone is very proud to announce the new album “YOU SHOCKED ME” for harmonica ace Bob Corritore & Friends is AVAILABLE for pre-order!
Harmonica ace Bob Corritore once again puts together an all-star blues showcase of his amazing friends, the cream of today’s current crop of blues artists, delivering 16 killer songs and electrifying performances! Captured during 12 recording sessions between 2018 and 2022, these 16 hard-hitting tracks deliver pure, unvarnished blues of the highest order. Recorded at Tempest Recording in Tempe Arizona, Corritore’s masterfully understated production captures the urgency of a live performance and the finishing touch to make complete, memorable songs. The glue that holds it all together is the combination of Bob’s focused production work and his expressive “serve the song” harmonica style.
Featured vocalists on this set include longtime collaborators Alabama Mike (who contributes four powerful songs), soul/blues/gospel icon Johnny Rawls, salt of the earth Southern bluesman Bill “Howl-N-Madd” Perry, Sugaray Rayford, Diunna Greenleaf, Jimi “Primetime” Smith, Oscar Wilson, Bob Stroger, Francine Reed, and Willie Buck.
Corritore has gained a strong presence in today’s blues market by releasing a solid output of music from his storied “Vaults” as well as current gems.
