Highlights from our exhibition opening on Tuesday!

 

Tuesday night’s exhibition opening was a great success and we thank everyone who was able to join us! Paul Devlin, film critic, will host an evening focused on the role that film has played in Ellison’s life and work.  We will view films featuring Ellison, films of others talking about Ellison, and film interpretations of his work. Rare recordings of Ellison reading his own work will be heard, and Paul will discuss the important role of movie-making in Ellison’s unpublished novel Three Days Before the Shooting….This evening will be a rare opportunity to see the outstanding and seldom-viewed 1999 film adaption of Ellison’s story « King of the Bingo Game. » Paul will also discuss the important role of movie-making in Ellison’s fiction.

$20 ($10 Students)In this interactive performance series, Michael Mwenso demonstrates how jazz can improve the quality of our lives. Listening to your favorite recordings with others is one of the best ways to share your enthusiasm and passion for jazz. At these sessions, curated by NJMH Artistic Director At Large Jonathan Batiste (who will appear via Skype as often as he can from his national tour), vocalist and elegant man about town, Michael Mwenso, will moderate a joyous listening party that you do not want to miss as the NJMH becomes THE happening spot in Harlem.

Tuesday, March 18: Jazz For Curious Listeners

The National Jazz Museum in Harlem’s upcoming exhibit in partnership with the Children’s Museum of Manhattan is the subject of the recent NYTimes ArtsBeat piece « Children’s Museum to Showcase Harlem’s Role in Jazz. » The exhibit, entitled « Jazzed! The Changing Beat of 125th Street », will focus on the key figures of the Harlem Renaissance and feature a jazz club, ballroom and theatre, as well as hands-on art and music making activities. Most of all, the exhibit will be pulsing continuously with live jazz music!
