About Made In New York Jazz Competition:
The Made in New York Competition, which launched in 2013, is international online jazz competition. Contestants submitted video clips which posted to the competition website, and the winners is decided by popular vote, Committee Members as well as a panel of judges: jazz greats Lenny White, Joe Lovano, and Randy Brecker. The contest grand prize is a cash award of $3000 plus an additional 10% from entry of each participant which makes the price constantly growing, along with the opportunity to travel to New York to headline the Made in New York Jazz Competition Gala Concert.
The second and third-place prizes in 2013 were provided by KAWAI USA—the future of the piano®— the elegant KAWAI ES7 Portable Digital Piano and the powerful KAWAI MP6 Professional Stage Piano to the Competition’s second and third-place finishers.
The extremely talented Italian Anna Vitale, whose video acoustic performance of Jon Hendricks’s “Centerpiece” with Bobby McFerrin quickly went viral, garnering numerous hits and being selected as the top choice by the Made in New York jazz competition judges. Misha Brovkin describes her talent as “boundless, an amazing performance” and says that this is exactly what’s so exciting about international jazz.
Second prize went to Evgeny Lebedev’s “World Trio” from Russia who performed an original composition rather than a cover tune, while Germany’s NGA Big Band took third place for their version of Bob Brookmeyer’s “The American Express.

The KBIO continues to turn improvisational ideas developed in the 7:00 pm workshop/ rehearsal into a fully formed 8:15 pm performance. Conducted in Karl’s inimitable style, developed at the legendary Creative Music Studio, this orchestra of extraordinary improvisers explores original themes and motives and melodies from the world’s folk, classical and jazz traditions, as well as musical ideas that arise spontaneously. Each player is a soloist in a suite ranging from chamber settings to full orchestral expressions. One of the orchestra’s trademarks is Ingrid Sertso’s story-telling
vocalization and poetry.Recent reviews paint a vivid picture of the KBIO proceedings:The suite-like performances have a warm, buoyant vibe issuing from brief folkloric-like motifs and the low-key, common-sense guidance Karl offers his players. They are mostly veteran musicians from avant rock and world music as well as jazz scenes, and can expand on simple themes paying utmost attention to dynamics and each other…..The collective’s intuited communication has attained a high point since shows began last April 2011 Howard Mandel The compositions of Karl Berger have a clear-cut destination, with a beginning, a middle, and an ending…..Surprisingly, much of Mr. Berger’s music isn’t exactly free form but draws on lush harmonies and a well-defined relationship between foreground soloists and background…..The music is comparatively easy on the ears because Mr. Berger also relies on woodwinds, reeds and strings (as well as the soothing voice of Ingrid Sertso) rather than brass. Will FriedwaldFrom the rotating cast of soloists, with a solid core of regulars, this evening includes Warren Smith, drums, John Hertenstein, John Pietaro, Hollis Headrick, percussion , Ken Filiano, Nicolas Letman, bass, Harvey Valdes, Michael Gassmann, guitar, John Ehis, mandolin, Mercedes Figueras, sopr. sax, Patrick Brennan, Welf Dorr, Rocco Iacovone, alto sax, Ras Moshe (tenor sax, flute), Bill Ylitalo, baritone sax, alto flute, piccolo flute, Sean Sonderegger, flute, bass clarinet, Bohdan Hilashm, contrabass clarinet, , Jason Candler, clarinet, Kirk Knuffke, Matt Lavelle, cornet , Yatsuno Katsuki (euphonium), Sana Nagano, Cecile Broche, Leonor Falcon, violin, Ingrid Sertso (vocals), and surprise guests. All net proceeds support the Creative Music Studio’s Archive Project, the preservation and re-mastering of over 400 historic CMS recordings by some of the finest innovators in music, in collaboration with Columbia University.

Jazz Hall of Fame Drummer’s Memoir
Captures Missing Years With
Trumpeter Chet Baker |
|
Independent publisher, BooksEndependent, LLC today announced the release of the personal, never before told story of “Chet Baker: The Missing Years, A Memoir by Artt Frank,” available in both trade paperback and Kindle Edition eBook. Foreword by Bobby Shew.Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 20, 2014 — Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame bop drummer, composer, lyricist, and vocalist Artt Frank, one of the few authentic bop musicians on the scene today, has written a poignant memoir of the west coast jazz scene of the late 1960s. Known for his friendship and musical collaboration with iconic trumpeter, Chet Baker, Frank provides jazz lovers with an intimate portrait of what are considered “the missing years” in Baker’s career – the period shortly after a brutal beating left the trumpeter unable to play.
As reviewed by premiere jazz journalist and critic, Doug Ramsey, this memoir “…shows us sides of the great trumpeter that few people knew. In gripping detail, he [Frank] tells of the well-known drama in Baker’s life—the sudden fame, the struggle with drugs, the effects of a beating that almost ended his career. But Artt gives us new insights into Chet’s warmth, his love of family, his steely determination and the early emergence of his astonishing talent… This is a book of revelations. »
In August of 2012, jazz great Dave Brubeck gave the following review: “Artt Frank, the author of “Chet Baker: The Missing Years” is a devout Christian who practices what he preaches. His personal memoir of his meeting and subsequent friendship with the jazz genius of the trumpet is an unvarnished, honest portrayal of Chet Baker. In depicting Chet’s struggle to recovery, Artt reveals great compassion for a sensitive soul fighting for a life, and puts to rest the rumors and gossip that circulated about Chet’s ‘missing years.’”
