About Made In New York Jazz Competition:
The Made in New York Competition, which launched in 2013, is international online jazz competition. Contestants submitted video clips which posted to the competition website, and the winners is decided by popular vote, Committee Members as well as a panel of judges: jazz greats Lenny White, Joe Lovano, and Randy Brecker. The contest grand prize is a cash award of $3000 plus an additional 10% from entry of each participant which makes the price constantly growing, along with the opportunity to travel to New York to headline the Made in New York Jazz Competition Gala Concert.

The second and third-place prizes in 2013 were provided by KAWAI USA—the future of the piano®— the elegant KAWAI ES7 Portable Digital Piano and the powerful KAWAI MP6 Professional Stage Piano to the Competition’s second and third-place finishers.

The extremely talented Italian Anna Vitale, whose video acoustic performance of Jon Hendricks’s “Centerpiece” with Bobby McFerrin quickly went viral, garnering numerous hits and being selected as the top choice by the Made in New York jazz competition judges. Misha Brovkin describes her talent as “boundless, an amazing performance” and says that this is exactly what’s so exciting about international jazz.

Second prize went to Evgeny Lebedev’s “World Trio” from Russia who performed an original composition rather than a cover tune, while Germany’s NGA Big Band took third place for their version of Bob Brookmeyer’s “The American Express.

Jazz Vespers
featuring the
Antoinette Montague Quartet
Forest Hills, NY, April 12, 2014:  The Church-in-the-Gardens is presenting a Jazz Vespers featuring the Antoinette Montague with Danny Mixon and Solomon Hicks. The service begins at 5 PM sharp and will conclude at 6:30 PM.  It will take place in the Sanctuary at 50 Ascan Avenue in Forest Hills Gardens at the intersection of Greenway North and Ascan Avenue.  We are presenting these services for those who may want to have a different experience in worship. The music will be the main focus and the word will supplement it. There will be a suggested offering of $20 per attendee but children, students and those with financial hardships can attend for free. Free parking passes are available at the church. We welcome you to this evening service based in music, supplemented by a short message from our new interim pastor Ron Wilson.
If you are still singing the winter blues, jazz up your mood with the sounds of the Antoinette Montague Quartet which will be performing at the next Jazz Vespers to be held at The Church-in-the-Gardens in Forest Hills Gardens, NY on April 12.  Starring the soulful Antoinette Montague, fellow musical artists Danny Mixon, Solomon Hicks, and Bobby Sanabria round out the quartet.  Bill Gati will also be making a special appearance, along with his saxophone.  The Jazz Vespers had its debut last Spring with the uplifting music of Jimmy Heath and Jeb Patton, a dynamic duo, and has since become a seasonal favorite at The Church-in-the-Gardens.  International Jazz Hall of Famer Junior Mance, who was once a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s band, entertained us on our very own piano and dazzled us with his quartet in the Fall. Christmastime, we were treated to the joyous harmonies of the Helen Sung Quartet. An interesting backdrop to these exciting performances is the fact that they all coincided with our 100th Anniversary celebrations in picturesque Forest Hills Gardens.  It is a memorable time for our Church and community so, if you missed any of these services, be sure to come to this next one and keep an eye out for future events.  Leave your blues at the door and walk into history with us as we celebrate God’s music once again along with a brief message from our new interim pastor, C. Ronald Wilson, in our beautiful, historic Sanctuary located at 50 Ascan Avenue.  It will be a moment you won’t soon forget. The Vespers will be from 5:00 PM until 6:30 PM.  A $20 donation will be requested in the form of an offering to help offset costs but don’t let that deter you from coming if you cannot afford it especially if you are a child, student or just experiencing financial hardship. Our desire is for all to be blessed so give what you can or just bring yourself and a friend.  Parking passes will be provided by the Church for those coming by car. Make sure you pick them up at the entranceway to the Church before you park so that you do not get booted.  Forest Hills Gardens is a private community.  We look forward to seeing you.by Constance Shell Radut

« Fred Ho’s style is a genre unto itself, a pioneering fusion of free-jazz and traditional Chinese music that manages to combine truculence and delicacy with such natural ease that it sounds positively organic. » Larry Birnbaum, Down Beat

Filene Concert Series: World Premieres & Exhibitions

Sunday, April 27th, 3pm

Arthur Zankel Music Center

Skidmore College

815 North Broadway

Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

(518) 580-5321

World Premiere of Double Concerto for Clarinet and Guitar by
James Emery to Feature Father & Daughter Soloists

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – On April 27, 2014, the Skidmore College Orchestra will present the world premiere of Double Concerto for Clarinet and Guitar, composed by the internationally acclaimed guitarist James Emery for his daughter Hannah and featuring the two of them, respectively, as the guitar and clarinet soloists. This concert will mark their public debut playing together in an orchestral setting.

The premiere will take place April 27th, 2014, at 3pm in the acoustically pristine Arthur Zankel Music Center Concert Hall at Skidmore, where Hannah is a senior. The performance will take place in Ladd Hall as part of the Filene Concert Series World Premieres and Exhibitions at Saratoga Springs, NY. Also featured on the concert will be a performance of the orchestral masterpiece by Mussorgsky/Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition.

“What sets the Double Concerto apart from my other large-scale works,” Emery says, “is that I have composed a double concerto for my daughter in which I can play alongside her supported by an orchestra of her peers and friends and led by a remarkable musician, Dr. Anthony Holland, a professor of Composition and conductor of the Skidmore College Orchestra.” Emery’s new work, his third piece for orchestra, was commissioned by Skidmore’s music department.

Hannah Emery ‘14 entered Skidmore as a Filene music scholar in 2010 and completed her junior year in Paris, studying clarinet at La Schola Cantorum.

“The Double Concerto is my most ambitious piece yet for orchestra,” offers Mr. Emery, “and my first professional acknowledgement of my daughter’s artistry and musical abilities.” While father-daughter duos have, on rare occasions, performed together, this is thought to be the first time that one of them was also the composer of the work.

Emery has been active at the forefront of the international jazz and contemporary music scenes since 1975. As a composer, he has written over 100 compositions ranging from solo guitar and chamber music to symphonic pieces. He has performed his works in over 25 countries, recorded more than two dozen CDs as a leader or co-leader, and co-founded the String Trio of New York, which  celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2012. The ensemble has been featured on National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition and Public Radio International’s Concerts from the Library of Congress.

Emery is known for his distinctive sound and touch as an improviser and composer. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for music composition and has performed at many of the major international jazz festivals and as a soloist in many of the world’s major concert halls, from Great Performers at Lincoln Center, Espace Cardin in Paris and London’s Royal Festival Hall to Tokyo’s Bunkamura Music Hall, Philharmonic Hall in Berlin and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. As a sideman, he has performed and recorded with such luminaries as Anthony Braxton, Steve Reich, Joe Lovano, Henry Threadgill, John Zorn, and Muhal Richard Abrams, among other leading artists.
