Alex García’s AfroMantra
« This Side of Mestizaje »
CD Release Party
@The New York City Business Club
Friday, May 2nd 7-10 PMFeaturingOle Mathisen-soprano sax
Mike Eckroth- pianist
Ariel de la Portilla- bass,
Alex García-drums, arrangements and compositions

Ok, listen up everybody. This new CD by AFROMANTRA/Alex Garcia, is so hot, that it burns the delights of all senses. From beginning to end, Alex Garcia and all the members of AFROMANTRA, demostrate once again, that this a very serious group to pay attention to. –  Ivan Acosta Latin Jazz USA

THIS SIDE OF MESTIZAJE
By Eliseo Cardona
He may be the first to disputed. And yet when writing music, drummer and composer Alex García seem to always be working in the realm of songwriting. Set lyrics to those long musical exploration he likes to write for his band AfroMantra, and you’ll probably get songs of the kind Chabuca Granda o Violeta Parra would have enjoyed if they approached the Latin American experience as a cross-pollination experiment.
This is what García does best, bringing together everything he has made his own: the Cuban rhythms he studied and treasured while growing up in Havana; the ancentral sounds of Peruvian music while also growing up in Lima; the jazz masters he has studied in awe. All has been mixed with the formative years in his native Santiago de Chile, which gave him the foundaton to open his ears, heart and mind. You can say that García does is jazz, claiming roots everywhere. This also what “This Side of Mestizaje” is all about.
The album is AfroMantra’s latest recording. And it is the band’s most brilliant. To peg the word jazz to it would be simply an understatement. True, these songs are springboards from which García and company work at once subtle and complex improvisations, but they also form a strong narrative that claims space in the chamber music hall. Songs with big musical statement.
Pianist John Lewis used to say that was higher call. Actually, all great music requires an elevation. Garcia invites his listeners to listen carefully while enjoying the journey.

Music is the most intimate journey there is. And when music is good, it brings listeners together, fans are pleased and hearts are contented.

Drummer and composer Alex García has made this belief the cornerstone of « This Side of Mestizaje » the latest recording of his iconic band AfroMantra. Described by many as « a gorgeous suite of intelligent details, » the album will be released May 6, 2014.

The CD release party will take place on Friday, May 2nd, 2014 in The New York City Business Club, located at 4 West 43rd St Between 5th and 6th Av in Manhattan from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. www.newyorkcitybusinessclub.com

AfroMantra is one of the most refined, sophisticated bands in New York’s Latin jazz scene. It is, as one critic described it, « a lab of rhythms crisscrossing the Americas. » Indeed, the band is the brainchild of Chilean-born, New York-based drummer Alex García, a composer who also believes that sounds celebrate many identities, not one, cultural experiences and artistic heights.

« This Side of Mestizaje » was recorded by soprano sax Ole Mathisen, pianist Mike Eckroth, bassist Ariel de la Portilla and Alex García on drums, arrangements and compositions. AfroMantra has been recording and performing for more than 13 years. Its third CD, « Uplifting Spirit-Espíritu Optimista, » garnered the attention of numerous jazz critics and radio stations around the world. The latest « This Side of Mestizaje » reaches new levels of interaction and beauty through a program of songs that celebrate the art of polyrhythms. Each is a small suite in a suite-like, larger canvas that pays tribute to many sounds of the Americas. This is what AfroMantra does best: to ride the different American sounds in an effortless way.

« Even in the beginning, we all felt that the band was like a musical family, » says Alex García. « But now, of course, the spirit of togetherness is more intimate, more tight and more telepathic. We aim for beauty and surprises, leaving spaces to learn more and enjoy the music. »

Born in Santiago, Chile, raised first in Lima, Perú and then Havana, Cuba, Alex García hails from a family of artists and musicians: his father, Fernando García Arancibia, is a prestigious contemporary composer who has seen his work performed by many important Latin American and European musicians; his mother, Hilda Riveros Wainstein, was an accomplished choreographer and dancer who after being the First Dancer at the National Ballet of Chile, worked for many years with her own modern dance company, Ballet Moderno de Camara in Lima, Perú; she then went to Cuba to become staff dancer and choreographer for Ballet Nacional de Cuba, and again to Chile to the Ballet Nacional Chileno and Ballet del Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile.

Alex graciously has dedicated this new release to her late mother as a way to say thank you for all the positive influences and impact she and his father have made on him.

« Music was not something I decided to follow, » says García; « even though I started a little late (17 years old), I believe music was always part of my DNA, part of who I am. I would say that music has been the passion that pushes me to live and create. »

All told, The Festival will give the audience a rare chance to hear the entire breadth and scope of early jazz, from the beginnings in New Orleans, through the music’s glorious migration to Chicago and then Harlem, up through the Roaring ’20s, Prohibition, and into the beginning of the Swing era.
This year’s festival will also devote more stages for continual live music. Two rooms will host featured bands, while another room will be dedicated to Ragtime and Stride Piano music, featuring pianist (and host of NPR’s Piano Jazz) Jon Weber, alongside musicians Ehud Asherie, Mark Shane, Dalton Ridenhour, Jesse Gelber, and Peter Yarin. In yet another room, The Festival will showcase a pair of special film showings, curated by Louis Armstrong scholar and archivist of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, Ricky Riccardi. The first — THE SATCHMO-THON — will be six hours of footage of vintage Louis Armstrong performances. During The Festival’s second half, THE HOT JAZZ CLIP FEST takes over the projector, featuring all things Hot Jazz as presented in film.
The Players Club is the new home of The New York Hot Jazz Festival. Overlooking Gramercy Park, this clubhouse holds more than a century of social club history, boasting founding members such as Mark Twain, Laurence Hutton, and William Tecumseh Sherman. Today, the venue’s goal is to cultivate an ambiance of conviviality, culture, history and comfort; in other words, a perfect setting for the New York Hot Jazz Festival.
After the music ends, it starts right back up again with a jam session at the Late Night Supper After-Party at Mona’s (224 Avenue B, b/t E. 13th and E. 14th Street) from 1am – 4am.

Vignola’s jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him « one of the brightest stars of the guitar. » In 1988 Vignola led his famed Hot Club of France tribute, which forged the way for the many Django Hot Club groups that followed. Some of Vignola’s best-loved albums include his collection of Gershwin pieces, Vignola Plays Gershwin, and his collaborations with Tommy Emmanuel (Just Between Frets) and David Grisman (Frank-n-Dawg, Melody Monsters). He has performed hundreds of clinics and masterclasses at major universities and colleges throughout the world, including Julliard and Boston University.

Hot Club of New York
Library 10:15pm – 11:15pm
The HOT CLUB OF NEW YORK is a multinational collaborative jazz project of musicians based in New York City brought together by mutual admiration for the original Quintette du Hot Club de France and led by French composer and violinist ADRIEN CHEVALIER. Chevalier comes from a long lineage of violinists, and began his musical training at age six; just nine years later, on his 15th birthday, he was sent to the Vatican to play for Pope John Paul II. After graduating from the prestigious Avignon Conservatory, Chevalier moved to Paris to perfect his knowledge of non-classical music, especially Balkan folklore and Le Jazz Hot or Gypsy Swing. When Chevalier moved to New York City to co-found the Avalon Jazz Band and, later, Hot Club of New York, he brought the rhythms and early jazz ambiance along with him. Joining the Hot Club of New York as a special guest will be French washboard virtuoso, DAVID LANGLOIS.

For those who fear that jazz is taking itself too “seriously” and losing its sense of fun and abandon, ES2’s new CD AlgoRhythms (on Twin Rivers Recordings) will bring a sigh of relief – followed by a big smile.  The brainchild of trombonist Erick Storckman and keyboardist Eliot Smith, ESmakes the kind of music that turns a club into a party and a concert hall into a revival meeting.   With no pretension, and a focus on jubilant expression and rollicking swing, AlgoRhythms takes an unfettered approach in the spirit of the Mingus small groups – with a great big sound, infectious compositions and explosive energy.

Outstanding composers as well as extraordinary players, Storckman and Smith have been playing together for a number of years and recently decided to assemble a group of kindred spirits to bring the pair’s collaborative efforts into a group context.  Tenor saxophonist Cliff Lyons, guitarist Pete McCann plus the bass and drums tandem of Andy Eulau and Scott Neumann prove to be ideal choices in making ESa most cohesive and potent unit.

The eight outstanding compositions include four by Smith, two by Storckman and a pair credited to both.  But the collaborative effort infuses the entire album as all eight pieces were arranged by both men, with Erick focusing on the horn parts and Eliot handling the rhythm.  The result is a clear-cut musical vision, totally united in its personal identity and fully integrated into the ensemble character.

The music encompasses a broad spectrum of the jazz vernacular, including soul jazz, bluesy hard bop, funk, straight-ahead and gospel. The musicians are exemplary in their skills and totally fluent in all the dialects of the extensive palette used in the fascinating tales told through the music.  All of them employ a take-no-prisoners approach of throwing themselves entirely into the music fearlessly and without hesitation.

Storckman’s trombone echoes the vibrant history of the instrument, using the horn’s entire range in a vigorously spirited style with the smoothness of J.J Johnson and the swagger of Jimmy Knepper.  Lyons is fiercely impassioned, combining the fluid approach of hard bop with the smoldering fire of the big-horn soul style best exemplified by Stanley Turrentine.  McCann is a flawless rhythm guitarist and audacious soloist with the full-bodied influence of rock consistently at play, but totally tasteful and always in the music.  Eulau (who plays electric bass throughout with the depth of an acoustic) combines with the impeccable drumming of Neumann for stunning interplay whether throbbing and rocking or crisply swinging.  And Smith’s mastery of a variety of keyboards provides the webbing that holds it all together, creating aural canvasses for the soloists, prodding, spurring and soloing brilliantly.

All of the melodic lines are catchy, lyrical and so singable that the listener can actually imagine words, giving the narrative of each story that much more contextual impact.  From the opening strains of the album’s first cut, Smith’s Orange Peel, that feeling is front and center, with a vehemently lyrical line launched by hard left hand piano that could be played by Dr. John by way of Professor Longhair.  Virile guitar, trombone and tenor solos set the tone that permeates the entire album.

Job Search, also by Smith, is an all-out funkfest colored by “real life” elements like newscast snippets and sirens added to the funky, up-tempo piece in a sumptuous atmosphere of electronic keyboards, driving bass and a rocking backbeat.  Hollering tenor in a syncopated groove, a Smith acoustic piano solo in a Bobby Timmons-ish explosion and wide-open screaming guitar highlight this in-your-face cut.

Our Man in Verona is another soul-drenched smoker written by Storckman.  A fluidly energetic and raunchy tenor solo is followed by a tremendously exciting and powerfully swinging trombone turn.  A sprawling, rock-hard guitar excursion over rip-roaring rhythm section takes us back to the melody, which almost sounds like it could be a James Bond theme.

A boppish vibe is set by Midnight, Michigan Avenue (by both composers).  A straightforward swinger stoked by the relentless pulse of the rhythm section – snapping electric piano, flawless rhythm guitar, fervid bass and sizzling drums – lays the groundwork for Storckman and Lyons to demonstrate how fully conversant they are in the language of hard bop.

A most entrancing atmosphere is created on Poor as Food, also co-composed by Storckman and Smith. There is a gentler, more subdued tone that quickly escalates with an aura of salient edge that gives the piece a most compelling and evocative gravitas.  Excellent solos by Storckman, Lyons and Smith further contribute to the spirited nature of the piece, painting such a vivid picture that you can almost see the movie it should accompany – a most stunning work.

Swanky, an ongoing persona in Smith’s imaginative array of ideas, is the central figure in a pair of pieces.  Swanky Goes Shopping is a jauntily strutting, rhythmically insistent, deeply grooved piece that is enhanced by a talking wah-wah guitar solo in the manner of Sly & the Family Stone’s classic instrumental Sex Machine, and a delicious gospel blues piano solo. Swanky Goes Uptown is a richly syncopated, more straight-ahead item with injections of funkiness.  Episodic in nature, it sets a fine framework for Lyons’ sparkling tenor solo, deep in Turrentine territory, howling, barking and rocking furiously.

This remarkable album concludes on a powerfully uplifting note with Storckman’sAt Long Last.  Deep in the gospel mode, this opulent, deeply emotive piece is highlighted by Lyons exhorting the spirit of Gene Ammons’ Preachin’ with Smith’s organ stirring up the congregation and McCann wailing soulfully.  One can easily envision a white-cloaked choir swaying and smiling with Shirley Caesar expected to join in at any moment.  A most stirring and profusely spiritual ending to a truly wonderful album.

HALIE LOREN — feat. Mads Tolling
@ Yoshi’s San Francisco Sun May 4th 7pm
Vocalist Halie Loren has a possesses a unique story as well, the artistic product of growing up in a remote Alaskan town called Sitka, and having better access as a child to a collection jazz records than she did pop music on the radio. Interestingly, Halie has also become a musical celebrity of sorts in Japan the past few years. — Read the full story here
During the past year, Halie has been making a big splash in the Bay Area, after an unexpected success last year ar Jazz in the Plazz in Los Gatos (her show was so well-received there that they invited her back to perform no later than her final bow last July 3rd) — Read the full story here
Halie and Mads share a lot in common — both of them are around the same age, they both write their own music, and both of them are passionate about exploring the inner and outer boundaries of Jazz. In some ways, I would imagine this could be a « Part II » to your previous story — . Halie Loren’s newest album Simply Love, is the first album of hers to have a heavy emphasis on arrangements with string instruments, one of the reasons Mads Tolling’s collaboration will be so special.

« Breathlessly appealing …  » — JazzTimes
Short Bio: Internationally-acclaimed jazz vocalist and songwriter Halie Loren is known for her alluring stage presence, an ethereal voice, and her original music. Her performances bring fresh perspective to the musical paths she journeys. Her genre-defying original compositions have been recognized with awards by the John Lennon Songwriting and the Billboard World Song contests. AllAboutJazz praised her most recent album, Simply Love, as « warm and seductive. » She has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, where she has been repeatedly brought back to Japan to headline the Blue Note and Cotton Club. Simply Love was placed on the ballot this year for a GRAMMY nomination.

Some Recent Passings:
2 Hipsters and an Institution
Stephanie Stone (1921-2014)

Chances are if you were attending one of the downtown New York City loft jazz shows in the past forty years you may have seen a couple sitting usually in the front row digging the music.
This couple was Irving and Stephanie Stone two hipsters who embraced the adventurous sounds of “The New Thing” ushered in the 1960s by John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra and many others who were the spiritual fathers to Sam Rivers who operated Studio Rivbea down on Bond St and a prime destination for improvised music played by David Murray, Hamiet Bluiett, Oliver Lake, Leroy Jenkins and many others that led to William Parker, bassist and prime mover of the downtown scene and founder of the Vision Festival.
Irving and Stephanie were ubiquitous on the scene miraculously appearing at numerous shows where they were pretty much the audience.
The downtown musicians loved Irving and Stephanie so much that a venue was named in their honor The Stone.
Irving passed away several years ago, but Stephanie never stopped attending live shows until cancer slowed her down in recent years and finally succumbed at the age of 93 last week.
There’s a wonderful portrait of Irving and Stephanie written by Martin Johnson in the Wall Street Journal.
You can read it here:
And here’s a very nice piece about Stephanie Stone put up on YouTube
A MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO STEPHANIE STONE will be held on Sunday, April 27th at Noon at The Stone
Irving and Stephanie Stone were a strong presence on the downtown music scene and their love and support will always be remembered.
The Stone hosts an afternoon of music and remembrances by those who loved them in honor of our dear friends. ADMISSION FREE

Norman Levy (1927-2014)

I first met Norman Levy as a tenderfoot record collector back in the early 1970s as a customer at his legendary subway record store A Train Records which was located down in the subway at 42nd and 8th avenue.   A Train Records was a funky little shop with bins right outside the store.  I’d make the pilgrimage from Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn to flip through his bins always turning up gems like John Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’ or  Yusef Lateef ‘s ‘Psychicemotus’ with those great gatefold covers and many other jazz gems from the classic era usually for $2 which kept me coming back for more.  Norman began his career with a number of retail positions working first at Sy Bondy’s, a stint with Masters and then as the record buyer for the entire Mays department store chain.
In the 1970s I had the opportunity to work with Norman after I left Happy Tunes managing the jazz department there I was hired to set up the Soho Music Gallery located at Wooster and Grand Streets, the very first record store in the now totally gentrified Soho district of New York City.  Norman was handling the cut outs and I managed the store.  There was some shady going’s on there so I moved on and so did Norman when he went to work for the legendary Brill building record emporium Colony Records located at 49th and Broadway.
Affectionally referred to by his Colony colleagues as ‘McVouty’ for his cool hipster way of speaking ala Slim and Slam Norman became the go to person at the Colony sheet music department for his immense knowledge of tunes.  If you could hum a few bars chances are Norman knew it and got you what you were looking for.  Over his years at Colony music royalty passed through that department including his life-long friend Sonny Rollins who would on occasion stop in the store to say hello and buy sheet music too.  After nearly 15 years managing that sheet music department he retired moving to Phoenix where he promptly got bored and took a job at Guitar & Keyboard City where he ran the sheet music dept.
Eventually even seasoned retailers have to be put out to pasture so Norman and his wife of 61 years Lee decamped to Lake Stevens, WA a suburb of Seattle to be near family.
Norman passed last week at the age of 87.
He is survived by his wife Lee, his older son, Neil, a grandson Jonas (son of Neil). They had a second younger son Jay who passed away of Aids 4 years ago.
J&R Music World (1971-2014)

This is one headline I thought I’d never see:
One of the last bastions of music retail in the Big Apple having survived Sam Goody, Tower, Virgin, HMV and countless others who came and went over the years J&R Music World was a solid rock of retail.
Opened in 1971 with one store on Park Row I can remember when Raachele Friedman worked the register in their record department down in the basement under her father’s upstairs electronics store.  From that one store they expanded to pretty much buying up all the real estate on that one block (except the hardware store) to an empire and giant of electronics retail with an international reputation.
Back in the hey day of the record business J&R Music World probably sold more records per square inch then any retailer in the US.
In fact when they first started they paid all their vendors in cash.  I was a sales rep back then and believe me when I tell you they kept many an independent record distributor afloat with their cash flow.
From 1985 to 1987 I managed their jazz department,  a stand alone store on top of their classical store at 33 Park Row.
Back in those days the record business was flush.  You could sell records with both hands 9 to 5 with no problem.
During the lunch rush (Noon to 2) you could sell a box of records right off the wall of any new release you played in the store.
I did ‘In Stores’ with many jazz legends including Horace Silver, Abbey Lincoln and Wayne Shorter.
You never knew who would stop in the store.  One time the actor Matt Dillion came in looking for classic Be Bop records for a role he was considering.
The article in the New York Times says it’s a reorganization so who know’s what the future will bring.
For those interested for a glimpse of what the hey day of record retailing looked like send me an e mail for a preview of:
