– SPECIAL APPEAL –
Take Action Now!
Dear friends,

The guardians of the Amazon rainforest are getting murdered.

Avaaz just released emergency funds to keep 5 Indigenous leaders safe — but it’s not enough.

Oil giants and loggers want to tear the Amazon apart — and Indigenous communities are the last line of defence. They are physically stopping the chainsaws, exposing oil spills, and winning new laws to protect the Amazon.

And that makes them a target — because if they are silenced, the Amazon will lose its human shield, and the jaws of destruction can be set free.

This is a special appeal for donations to help keep them safe.

When forest guardians face immediate danger, your donation will help to fund emergency relocations, safe-houses, and round-the-clock monitoring. Together we could create a safety net covering six Amazon countries.

Your donation will also empower Indigenous leaders to steer the negotiations for a binding treaty to save the rainforest. Avaaz is fully supporting a delegation of leaders at the global nature summit in Colombia, happening right now.

The more we raise from this email, the more we can do to support them, on the ground, today.

Life is cheap in the Amazon. Under $100 to have someone killed. But together, from across the planet, we can help to keep hundreds of Indigenous leaders safe. They’re protecting the Earth’s most precious rainforest — on which we all depend. Donate what you can now:

OTHER AMOUNT

Wildfires, oil drilling, and illegal mining are pushing the Amazon to the very edge of survival. Scientists warn that if 20-25% of the forest is lost, the entire ecosystem could collapse into a dry savanna. Indigenous guardians are the forest’s last line of defence, and together we can help keep them safe.

We just spoke to one of the Waorani leaders who is currently in hiding. They are safe, for now.

But as Indigenous leaders grow louder, and their victories stack up, they become even bigger targets. Those who stand to make millions from looting and polluting the rainforest now see them as obstacles to be removed.

That’s why we’re making this special appeal. They are counting on our support. If we raise enough we could:

  • Fund a safety net for Amazon defenders across six countries, ensuring leaders can be evacuated and protected when immediate threats arise;
  • Provide safe-houses and security equipment, including CCTV cameras, radios, and secure internet connections — so leaders can organise their communities even when in hiding;
  • Ensure dozens of leaders can safely travel from the Amazon to global summits, fighting for the forest as key decisions are made. We’ve done this for the last 6 years, because their voices are undoubtedly influencing global treaties;
  • Support rainforest communities like the Waroni, the Chapra, and the Suruí to protect their territories from state-owned oil-drilling companies, and;
  • Accelerate Avaaz campaigns to protect the planet’s most critical ecosystems and the balance of life on Earth.

This is a chance to support the very people putting their bodies on the line to save the Amazon. Let’s help to keep Indigenous leaders safe, right now — and fuel their fight to protect the rainforest, for good.

Our movement has supported an uprising of Amazon Indigenous leaders for years. Together, we’ve funded their participation at international talks, organised media and security training, helped leaders coordinate across the rainforest — and even provided humanitarian support during the COVID pandemic.

They see us as their allies. We cannot let them down.

With fierce hope and endless determination, always

Good news! South Africa’s government recently committed to ban the “lion jails” where about 8,000 lions are trapped and exploited. Now, local conservationists are asking Avaaz’s global community to urge South Africa to extend the ban to all big cats – tigers, cheetahs, leopards and jaguars. Join now to help make their roar louder!

Dear friends,

Lions, tigers and other big cats are bred for trophy hunting, cub petting, volun-tourism, and trade…but now one country could change this with the stroke of a pen!

The South African government wants to ban the “lion jails” where almost 8,000 of these majestic creatures are exploited for profit. This is amazing news! We can help other big cats by urging South Africa to extend the ban to tigers, cheetahs, leopards and jaguars.

Conservation groups calling for protection for ALL big cats are asking the Avaaz community to help make their roar louder. So let’s join the call to push South Africa one step further, and when our pride of voices is large enough, we’ll deliver our roar straight to the government.

Big cats are predators and need a huge amount of space that is nearly impossible to provide in human captivity. Which is why breeding, “jailing” and petting them is so cruel.

We should applaud South Africa for making the right decision for lions – this is a significant step! But there is also a risk that other species end up being a replacement for lions if they are not granted the same protections.

So join today and invite your friends to become part of the global pride of people calling for a wider captivity and interaction ban that protects all big cats!

Avaaz members’ love for beings who share this planet with us pushes us to speak up for wildlife again and again. We supported undercover investigations to help shut down poaching networks, busted illegal ivory trades, and bought lands to protect habitat in key areas. Today, let’s help end big cat farming industries in South Africa.

With love and hope,

Huiting, Antonia, Nate and the whole Avaaz team

URGENT: as the people of Gaza and Lebanon endure a deluge of artillery fire, recognition of Palestine is one of the last hopes for lasting peace. The world’s heads of state are meeting at the UN at this very moment, and some key countries are hesitating, under relentless pressure from the USA and Israel. But a huge appeal from citizens around the world can persuade Canada, the UK, France and Japan to recognise Palestine as a state. Sign and share our appeal for peace and freedom now:

Dear friends,

As the bombs rain down on Gaza and Lebanon, some heads of state could make a decision this week at the UN that could give peace another chance.

For a year now, everyone in Gaza has been living through a deluge of fear, fire, tears and blood. In the West Bank, families are driven from their homes to make way for illegal settlements; their sick are stuck for hours at Israeli military checkpoints on their way to hospital; and families are divided by a huge wall that cuts off their fields. But if Palestine becomes a state recognised by the world’s most powerful countries, this victory would seal the creation of two states, Palestine and Israel, living side by side in peace and security.

The United States and Israel are lobbying hard to derail the project. At the UN this week, the leaders of Japan, France, Canada and the UK are more hesitant than ever. Let’s make our voices heard and persuade them to speak out for peace and freedom. We’re already over 1.5 million strong. Join the world’s largest campaign for the recognition of Palestine, and let’s push back against those who would sabotage peace.

This legitimate, non-violent proposal represents an unparalleled opportunity to move beyond the endless talks led by the United States, which only condone the massacres and illegal dispossession of Palestinian land by Israeli “settlements.” A new status for Palestine would pave the way for a fairer peace process between the two countries.

While the Israeli and American governments take the lead in pushing back at the United Nations, the vast majority of the world’s other countries support this diplomatic proposal as a way out of the violence. In addition to a much-needed ceasefire, this declaration could be a way out of the conflict. It would be a decisive step towards ending the occupation and the violence.

Bombs are killing hundreds of innocent people as we speak. Certain heads of state hold the key to this new hope of peace and freedom. If we can persuade France, Japan and the UK to stand on the right side of history and support Palestinian independence with unwavering political and financial backing, it could be the cornerstone of the peace process. Sign this petition now:

Palestine’s access to statehood won’t solve the conflict with a wave of a magic wand, but official recognition will change the dynamics of negotiation and pave the way for freedom and peace. People all over Palestine could win a freedom that generations have never known. Let’s support them.

With hope and determination,

Marie, Fadi, Julian, Marco and the all Avaaz team

Thousands of Indigenous Maasai have been forced from their land to make way for wealthy tourists – and now they’re being wiped from voter rolls in a government attempt to get the remaining brave few to leave. The Tanzanian president is successfully keeping this quiet so it won’t impact international funding – but we can change that! Join this urgent global call to restore Maasai voting rights ahead of key elections:

Dear friends,

100,000 Maasai citizens were just erased from the voter rolls in Tanzania, for daring to stay on their ancestral lands. Using firearms and teargas, the government has expelled thousands of Indigenous Maasai to make way for safari tourism. Now, they’re taking it a step further by stripping the brave few that remain at home in the Ngorongoro district of their right to vote.

The Tanzanian government is trying to keep it quiet to avoid backlash from pro-democracy funders – but a global roar from our movement can put the spotlight on this violation, force funders to draw a line in the sand, and help the Maasai to restore their right to vote.

Elections are approaching fast – add your name now:

Stripping the Maasai of their voting rights is the latest horror in a years-long government campaign to marginalise, displace, and impoverish the Maasai pastoralists in Tanzania.

They’ve simply erased 11 voting wards in the Ngorongoro district – where over 100,000 Maasai are registered! It will take a major global outcry for the Tanzanian government to reverse course – and that’s exactly what we can help achieve.

Let’s stand with the Maasai and make sure they are back on the rolls before local elections take place in November – add your name now:

Our community has held the line against the erasure of the Maasai people before. Together we ensured that the voices of Maasai elders were heard in the global press, we funded documentation and local resistance, and we’ve spoken up against the Tanzanian government’s barrage of discriminatory policies. Let’s come together to make a difference once again – and support the Maasai in their fight for survival.

With hope and determination,

Liliana, Alice, Pascal, Nate, Antonia, Laura, and the rest of the Avaaz team

Snow leopards AVAAZ

Dear friends,

The Chujjung River valley in Nepal is a kind of mountain paradise — a precious scrap of habitat for endangered red pandas, musk deer, and some of the last few snow leopards left on Earth.

But now it’s all under threat — as you read this, bulldozers are on their way to build a massive hydropower dam that will drown this valley, wiping out the animals and Indigenous communities who live here.

However, these people aren’t giving up. They’ve come up with a last-ditch plan to stop this dam — and they need our help to make it work.

The dam requires building roads to truck supplies up the mountains. But by buying specific parcels of land and registering them as protected, the community here can block the roads from being built — which means the dam can’t happen.

It’s simple, but effective: similar buffer zones are protecting other critical habitats in Nepal already.

But for it to work, they need funds to buy the land. That’s where we come in. If we can raise enough with this email, community leaders say they can get this land officially protected within weeks. And our donations will go even further — funding Avaaz campaigns that stand with Indigenous communities and safeguard life on Earth.

This is a chance to help protect some of the last snow leopards — partnering with the Indigenous communities who’ve ensured they survive until today. Let’s block the bulldozers. Let’s stop this dam. Donate what you can now:

Snow leopards face life and death threats at every turn: mega infrastructure projects, poaching, expanding cities, the climate crisis… their world melts away, year on year.

There may now only be 3,500 left in the wild.

This new dam would be another nail in the coffin — threatening one of the few undisturbed territories they have left in these mountains.

Nepal’s Indigenous Bhote community have stewarded this place for centuries. They’re the reason it remains a safe haven for threatened species. But if this dam goes ahead, the villages, monasteries and way of life here could all be washed away.

It’s their plan to buy this land — a fight for biodiversity, and for their own survival. And it can work, but it needs funding. If we raise enough, we could:

  • Buy strategic parcels of land in Nepal’s Chujjung valley — registering them as officially protected, blocking bulldozers from their intended construction site, and supporting the legal and media work to ensure protections are upheld;
  • Partner with Indigenous communities who are fighting to protect their lands around the world — supporting them to resist megaprojects, and protecting our world’s remaining biodiversity;
  • Fund crucial Indigenous lawsuits — that challenge land grabs and the decimation of ecosystems and watersheds; and
  • Push for radical action on biodiversity and climate — getting Indigenous leaders to the nature summits that matter in the coming months.

Our movement supported the Bhote community to lay down protections for this region in 2019 — helping to create a huge ‘biocultural heritage zone’. But Nepal’s hunger for hydropower has only grown. Now, we need to help the Bhote finish the job, and protect this place for good. Together, we can help them preserve their culture, and protect a vast snow leopard habitat in a rapidly changing world. Avaaz is proud to have stood with Indigenous Peoples in their fight for justice — blocking megaprojects and land grabs from Tanzania to the Amazon. We’re a movement from every country on Earth: lawyers, activists, teachers, journalists, grandparents. And when millions of us act as one, across the planet, we can make an outsize difference to the world we leave our future ancestors.

With fierce hope and endless determination,

Jon, Mike, Bert, Antonia, Ana Sofia and the whole team at Avaaz

Note: Snow leopards are incredibly difficult to photograph — because they are so rare and elusive. The photo above is from Kyrgyzstan, where snow leopard habitat is also under threat and in decline.
