Keyon Harrold Shares “Don’t Lie” Feat. Malaya

Acclaimed trumpeter-composer Keyon Harrold makes his Concord Jazz label debut with his long-awaited single, “Don’t Lie” feat. Malaya, available now on all DSPs and streaming services. “Don’t Lie” marks the critically acclaimed artist’s first new music in more than half a decade.

Harrold will celebrate his new music with a busy live schedule, including dates alongside Karl Denson and performances at an array of top jazz festivals, including Newport Jazz Festival, Telluride Jazz Festival, and music at the Intersection.

“Ditcher” Performance

“’Ditcher’ wrote itself after I’d been awake for about 36 hours,” Miller explains to BrooklynVegan. “I had been in a fever, recording and working on songs for several days in the basement of the house I used to live in Madison, TN, and I started playing a melody that knocked me in the head. The words came out in about ten minutes and I made a fully-formed demo of it right away, which has maybe only happened to me a handful of times. I don’t know where it came from, but I liked it enough that it became one of my favorites on the record, as well as the source of the album’s title.”

Like countless millions of Americans, singer-songwriter Zella Day felt overwhelmed by the chaos and toxicity spawned by the 2020 election cycle. She channeled those feelings into a rousing and spirited rendition of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train.”

Day explains what inspired her take on the Osbourne classic, first released in 1980. “I wanted to choose a song deeply embedded in the American psyche, loved by the majority. ‘Crazy Train’ speaks to the proverbial toxic political climate with irrefutable truth, reminding us today that history is in fact repeating itself.” She reflects, “Pain is a struggle that, in some cases, can act as a catalyst to bring people together despite their differences. In ‘Crazy Train,’ Ozzy sings of political and societal manipulation scarring generations. Change is possible if we work together, but first we must practice empathy, and in his words, “learn how to love and forget how to hate.”

Concord Records is launching the preorder of Esperanza Spalding’s 12 Little Spells with the release of “Lest We Forget” (4/26) and “How To” (5/3), two of four new original songs that she recently recorded and added as bonus tracks for the expanded edition. Listen here. On May 10, 12 Little Spells will be available for the first time on physical formats (CD, vinyl) and download. To accompany the release, Esperanza will be releasing three music videos to highlight her bonus tracks.

Esperanza Spalding released this audacious new project last fall, releasing one new spell per day on her website and social platforms as well as a “Live Liner Notes” hosted on Facebook all resulting in over 5.2 million views. The spells came in the form of new music, which was crafted by Spalding at a castle in Italy, and then recorded in sessions completed in Brooklyn. Up to this date, the album has only been available on streaming platforms.
