Calling All Volunteers!
Louis Armstrong House Museum
Announces New Docent Program:
AllStar Corps.
Time to jam with Louis!

Calling all volunteers! Louis Armstrong House Museum announces new docent program: AllStar Corps.  Time to jam with Louis! The Louis Armstrong House Museum is calling on volunteers that are 18-118 years old to join its museum docent-training program. The volunteer position serves a vital link between the historic house and the museum’s visitors by interpreting this extraordinary historic site for them. The museum offers flexible schedules for volunteers who wish to donate 5-35 hours per month as part of the program. The museum has only 25 spots open in its inaugural class.  In addition to membership in the museum’s AllStar Docent Corps, benefits include a certificate of recognition of service, free admission for up to four family members to the museum, employee discount in the LAHM shop, invitation for two to LAHM annual holiday party, gift book and Louis Armstrong House museum t-shirt.

Volunteers in the museum’s AllStar Corps will guide visitors through the Louis Armstrong House Museum, introduce the orientation film and shape the visitor experience by accompanying guests throughout their time at the museum. Docents will also assist at museum special events and perform light clerical tasks as needed.  Bilingual docents are welcome for our international visitors.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume tovolunteer@LouisArmstrongHouse.org by January 21st for the opportunity to be considered as part of the inaugural class of the AllStar Docent Corps.

In a city as rich in art and entertainment as New York City, the Louis Armstrong House Museum stands as a modern, living memoir of a true American Icon.   LAHM, a non-profit 501c(3) organization, is a National Historic landmark and New York City landmark. All of its furnishings are original and have been preserved, giving visitors the feeling that Louis and Lucille just stepped out for a minute. Since opening its doors ten years ago, LAHM has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors to the wonderful world of Louis Armstrong. LAHM holds seven collections of photographs, sound recordings, letters, manuscripts, instruments and artifacts, making it the largest publicly held archival collection in the world devoted to a jazz musician.

The Louis Armstrong House Museum is located at 34-56 107th Street in Corona, New York. The Museum is open Tuesday – Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday/Sunday from 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm.  Parking is available within the neighborhood and the museum is accessible by subway via the 7 Train.

The National Jazz Museum in Harlem  Events January 6-10
Tuesday, January 7

Jazz For Curious Listeners
Broadway Boogie Woogie: Rhythm in the Visual Arts with Bob O’Meally
7:00-8:30 PM
Location: The National Jazz Museum in Harlem

Ask a painter to “explain” a painting to you, and within minutes, hands will be flying, as they describe the angles and the rhythms of the images. This evening, we will investigate the influence that jazz had on such masters as Stuart Davis, Piet Mondrian and Romare Bearden. Our guide will be Professor Robert G. O’Meally, Columbia University’s Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English and Comparative Literature, and founder and director of the Center for Jazz Studies. His new project is a full study of Bearden’s uses of literary subjects, and this evening Professor O’Meally will share his passion for jazz and fine art in an original, provocative and eminently entertaining way.

Thursday, January 9

Harlem Speaks
Billy Drummond, Drummer
6:30-8:30 PM
Location: The National Jazz Museum in Harlem

Critically acclaimed drummer Billy Drummond joins NJMH this month for our landmark oral history series, Harlem Speaks. Drummond first came to international prominence with the bands of Horace Silver, J.J. Johnson and Sonny Rollins, with whom he spent three formative years. Now one of the busiest players of his generation, Drummond can be heard on nearly 300 albums, including three critically acclaimed recordings as a band leader, one of which – cult hit Dubai (Criss Cross) – was named Number 1 Best Jazz CD that year by the New York Times. He currently leads his own band Freedom of Ideas in New York. A serious student of the drums as well as an exemplary musician, we look forward to this informative and enjoyable evening.
