Jake Hertzog “Throwback”
(Zoho ZM201314)
Jake Hertzog-Guitar, Randy Brecker-Trumpet and Flugelhorn, Harvie S-Acoustic and Electric Bass, Victor Jones-Acoustic and Electric Drums
About Jake Hertzog
Guitar Player is calling him“…the blazing wunderkind.” and “one of the finest young jazz guitarists on the scene”. Award-winning jazz-rock guitarist and composer, Jake Hertzog, has just released his fourth studio album, Throwback [Zoho], featuring special guest jazz fusion icon Randy Brecker! His first three albums, Chromatosphere (2009), Patterns [Buckyball Records], andEvolution [Buckyball Records], quickly gained international regard and critical acclaim, including a five page interview in Guitar Player magazine (June 2009) highlighting his unique technique and approach to modern jazz guitar. Throwback highlights the unique contempoary sound of Jake’s original music and a back-to-basics traditional recording philosophy. It was produced by Grammy award winner, Rob Fraboni [Rolling Stones, The Band, Eric Clapton, Wayne Shorter]. “Throwback emerges as a major milestone in Hertzog’s young career” – Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz
For three years, Jake stood as musical director and lead guitarist for Nickelodeon’s The Naked Brothers Band stars, Nat and Alex Wolff. They concluded two national tours and have performed on countless national television shows including Good Morning America, The View, Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards and The Today Show.
A true dual jazz-rock musician, Jake is co-leader and co-songwriter of the rock band The Young Presidents with bassist Mitch Kaneff. Their first album Freedom Of Speech was played on AAA radio in 2011 featuring the single “Wide Open”, and their upcoming project Coalition [MKM], features such legendary talent as Corey Glover (Living Colour), Blondie Chaplin (The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys), Ivan Neville and Anton Fig (Drummer for the Letterman Show).
The record represents a landmark collaboration for the band and was also produced by the brilliant Grammy winner, Rob Fraboni. The Young Presidents also produced a short documentary on the making of the project entitled “Building The Coalition” that premiered at New York’s VisionFest Film Festival in June 2013.
Under the alias Hey Jazz Guy, Jake is a frequent contributor to Guitar Player magazine’s ‘Lessons’ section. He has over 30 published articles with coinciding YouTube instructional videos. Guitar Player has coined him the “Jazz ambassador to the non-jazz world”. Readers can visit the Official Hey Jazz Guy website for articles and tutorial videos. Recent master classes and clinics include Jazztravaganza at the Clarion Performing Arts Center in Lake Jackson, Texas and Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA.,Women In Jazz in Halle, Germany and a faculty position at the Swarnhaboomi Academy of Music in Chennai, India.
After winning of the Grand Prize in 2006 for the Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition in Switzerland, he was invited back in 2007 to open for John Scofield and Medeski, Martin and Wood. Jake is an alum of the prestigious Berklee College of Music and recipient of several performance scholarships.

Aout Trevor Gordon Hall
From the outskirts of Philadelphia PA, Trevor is an acoustic instrumentalist whose compositions range in style from driving rhythms to soft melodic phrases. Trevor caught the eye of 9 time Grammy winning producer Joe Nicolo (James Taylor, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, etc.), who produced two of Trevor’s releases entitled “Finding My Way” and “Let Your Heart Be Light”. These releases garnered high reviews and gave Trevor such opportunities as recording with bass virtuoso Michael Manring as well as continuing to share the stage with artists such as Pat Martino, Phil Keaggy, Don Ross, Andy Mckee, Alex Skolnick, The California Guitar Trio, Billy Cobham etc. Trevor has collaborated with various builders to redesign an instrument called the kalimba, which mounts to the surface of the guitar. Compositions inspired by the pairing of the two instruments can be heard in Trevor’s Candyrat Records debut “Entelechy”. Upon its release, this album climbed the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts, as well as YouTube Top Commented/Top Favorited/Most Discussed categories with the release of videos. His music has been featured on various national radio stations including NPR and television networks including NBC. Trevor performs throughout the USA, Canada, and Europe.
“…In the genre of intriguing guitar players Trevor really stands out. His music is both soothing and challenging…”
Graham Nash – Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and well known member of the group Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
“…Creative imagination resides, as well as flourishes within certain artists, and it certainly does so in Trevor Gordon Hall. Ingenuity is something that always causes surprise, and this gentleman’s abilities are totally exceptional…”
Pat Martino – Legendary Jazz Guitarist
“…Trevor is very skilled…his compositions are beautiful, atmospheric, open and heartfelt…I admire him very much…”
Tommy Emmanuel, Award Winning guitar virtuoso

SOME REVIEWS OF DENNY ZEITLIN SOLO PERFORMANCES
“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.” Don Heckman, LOS ANGELES TIMES
“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.” George Goodman, NEW YORK TIMES
“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.” Don Freeman,SAN DIEGO UNION
“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.” MUNCHNER MERKUR (Munich)
SOME REVIEWS OF DENNY ZEITLIN TRIO PERFORMANCES
“There was a sense of play, creativity and boldness; one felt the power of improvisation as a skill and as an almost philosophical endeavor.”
Ben Ratliff, NEW YORK TIMES
“Merging a 1960s-’70s sensibility with a profound awareness of classical-piano history and technique, Zeitlin remains a gloriously unconventional player. In general, he pursues an unlikely array of musical idioms, apparently oblivious to musical fashion or trend…exquisitely, uniquely, Zeitlin.”
Howard Reich, CHICAGO TRIBUNE
“The Denny Zeitlin Trio is one of our era’s great bands…they’ve got the virtually telepathic interplay of a band that’s been together awhile…the foundations–of the building, of society–shook, as the trio played with a very high level of elan, energy, and empathy…Together, these three secretly rule the world…the world of piano trios, at the very least. ” Mark Keresman, JAZZREVIEW.COM
“In addition to being a world-class jazz pianist, Zeitlin has been a working psychiatrist for decades…Zeitlin–working in powerfully interactive fashion with bassist Buster Williams and drummer Matt Wilson–offered another of the envelope-stretching sets that have long been his stock in trade.”
Don Heckman, LOS ANGELES TIMES
“Monterey just has a special feeling about it. This year’s lineup included some real legends…the great bassist Buster Williams, who spent Sunday evening in a trio led by another astonishing player, pianist Denny Zeitlin…This trio, with drummer Matt Wilson, a master of small gestures, played…the weekend’s deepest music: vital and pulsing, like brain tissue, with lush introspective harmonies. The super-responsive rapport among the musicians went way beyond technique and into the secret world of musical intuition. “Richard Scheinin, SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS

Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 25 CD’s as a leader to date), co-leading The Stryker/Slagle Band, Blue To The Bone or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”
Dave Stryker was voted once again into the 2013 Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls. Besides his own 25 recordings Stryker has appeared as a sideman or producer on over 100 others. As a composer he has recorded and published over 130 original compositions. He is involved in passing it on, and was recently hired as the new Jazz Guitar instructor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Tribeca Performing Arts Center will celebrate the legacy of the legendary Minton’s Playhouse, mythical birthplace of bebop, or the modern jazz sound, in 2014. Minton’s was significant as after-hours haunt uptown in Harlem where musicians would often come after their gigs elsewhere in the city, to jam with the house rhythm section. In that spirit we will engage drummer Carl Allen as the leader of our “house rhythm section” and leader of an organized jam session, what they used to refer to as the “straw boss” of the jam session, the person who calls the tunes and the person who brings up musicians to jam. One performance only (and it won’t be on a Monday)!

The New York-based saxophonist Craig Yaremko, along with organist Matt King, drummer Jonathon Peretz, and special guest guitarist Vic Juris, push the limits of the tradition while displaying a powerful group chemistry. The band swings hard on originals by both Yaremko and King, and puts fresh spins on jazz classics by Monk, Strayhorn, Hubbard and Waller. CYO3 is Yaremko’s debut on OA2 Records and his forth as a leader, following his recording “Sync,” which was a Top Ten pick from New York’s Hot House Magazine for release.
“‘Sync’ reveals an artist who…already has a powerful musical personality. Yaremko’s originals, which touch on the jazz tradition while also looking forward, are rife with musical adventures. Likewise, his covers of such songs as Lennon-McCartney’s “Michelle” offer fresh, open-minded approaches…”-Zan Stewart, Newark Star-Ledger
“It is hard to imagine how many ultra-talented musicians lie in the weeds, with no big-budget record contract or nationwide touring schedule that allows them to reach the masses. Discovering one is like finding a pearl in your oyster — and the pearl on Sync is the multiple reed-playing Craig Yaremko…Craig Yaremko is a jack of many instruments, and here he is the master of all — and a darn good writer and arranger to boot.”
-John Cizik, Jazz Improv NY (now Jazz Inside)

Legendary Jazz Ensemble M’Boom Re: Percussion Reunites
Under The Leadership of Original Member Joe Chambers
For A Special Concert with the KBz Strings and Special Guests
at Woodruff Arts Center’s Rich Theater, Saturday June 14
|
|
M’Boom Re: Percussion, the legendary jazz ensemble featuring a multitude of drummer/percussionists assembled and founded by music master Max Roach in the 1970’s reunites under the leadership of original member Joe Chambers for a special concert featuring the KBz Strings plus special guests at the Woodruff Arts Center’s Rich Theater, 1280 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30309 onSaturday, June 14, 2014 at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $35 in advance, $45 at the door, $15 for students and can be purchased at Rich Theater call (404) 733-5000 or online at Woodruffcenter.org. A Q&A will take place prior to the show.First assembled by future NEA Jazz Master Max Roach in 1971 in order to showcase the percussion family’s wide range of musical capabilities, M’Boom re: Percussion initially brought together a half dozen jazz drummers – Roach, Joe Chambers, Freddie Waits, Roy Brooks, Warren Smith and Omar Clay – to perform in tandem on an expansive array of percussion instruments, large and small; from trap drums, tympani and marimba to triangles, bells and shakers. The group’s 1973 eponymous debut recording on the AfroAmerican cooperative record label Strata East added Latin percussionist Richard “Pablo” Landrum on conga drums and bongos in the chair that is currently held by longtime band member Ray Mantilla. One of jazz’s most versatile veteran multi-instrumentalists, Joe Chambers has appeared with many of the music’s greatest forward looking artists, including Joe Henderson, Andrew Hill, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Sam Rivers, Woody Shaw, Archie Shepp, Wayne Shorter and McCoy Tyner. A leader in his own right, Chambers has recorded a host of critically acclaimed albums from his debut date The Almoravid to his most recent Grammy nominated recording Joe Chambers Moving Pictures Orchestra Live At Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. While well known for his impressive skills as a drummer, Chambers is an equally talented vibraphonist and composer, roles that will be showcased in this special concertM’Boom re: Percussion features Chambers and fellow original member Warren Smith, with longtime colleagues Ray Mantilla and Eli Fountaine and the ensemble’s newest constituent, multi-Grammy Award nominee Bobby Sanabria. Collaborating with the group will be the KBz Strings, under the direction of Kerren Berz, the accomplished violinist and current Concertmaster of the Columbus (GA) Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Berz has performed with the Atlanta Symphony, the Harlem Festival Orchestra, and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra and shared the stage with musical legends, including Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart and Joni Mitchell. They will be joined by special guests, Atlanta multi-reedist Howard Nicholson and bassist Edwin Williams. This special concert will feature a multifaceted program from M’Boom’s expansive repertoire, including Omar Clay’s “Onomatopoeia” and Warren Smith’s “Elements Of A Storm / Thunder & Wind” (both from the group’s first album), Bobby Hutcherson’s beautiful “Poema Para Ravel” and the Chambers compositions “Gazelle Suite,” “The Gauntlet,” and “Samba de Maracatu,” as well as his arrangement of Janet Jackson’s pop hit “Come Back To Me.” Chamber’s notes that this melding of AfroAmerican and the European classical traditions is the next step in the evolution of M’Boom. In the past the ensemble has partnered with the World Saxophone Quartet (first at the Cathedral of Saint Johns the Divine in a concert aptly billed The Grand Collaboration and more recently at New York’s Birdland) with great results. This concert will undoubtedly be yet another important advance in the legendary ensemble’s storied history. |
