About Jake Hertzog

Guitar Player is calling him“…the blazing wunderkind.”  and “one of the finest young jazz guitarists on the scene”. Award-winning jazz-rock guitarist and composer, Jake Hertzog, has just released his fourth studio album, Throwback [Zoho], featuring special guest  jazz fusion icon Randy Brecker!  His first three albums, Chromatosphere (2009), Patterns [Buckyball Records], andEvolution [Buckyball Records], quickly gained international regard and critical acclaim, including a five page interview in Guitar Player magazine (June 2009) highlighting his unique technique and approach to modern jazz guitar. Throwback highlights the unique contempoary sound of Jake’s original music and a back-to-basics traditional recording philosophy. It was produced by Grammy award winner, Rob Fraboni [Rolling Stones, The Band, Eric Clapton, Wayne Shorter]. “Throwback emerges as a major milestone in Hertzog’s young career” – Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz

For three years, Jake stood as musical director and lead guitarist for Nickelodeon’s The Naked Brothers Band stars, Nat and Alex Wolff. They concluded two national tours and have performed on countless national television shows including Good Morning AmericaThe ViewNickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards and The Today Show.

A true dual jazz-rock musician, Jake is co-leader and co-songwriter of the rock band The Young Presidents with bassist Mitch Kaneff. Their first album Freedom Of Speech was played on AAA radio in 2011 featuring the single “Wide Open”, and their upcoming project Coalition [MKM], features such legendary talent as Corey Glover (Living Colour), Blondie Chaplin (The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys), Ivan Neville and Anton Fig (Drummer for the Letterman Show).

The record represents a landmark collaboration for the band and was also produced by the brilliant Grammy winner, Rob Fraboni. The Young Presidents also produced a short documentary on the making of the project entitled “Building The Coalition” that premiered at New York’s VisionFest Film Festival in June 2013.

Under the alias Hey Jazz Guy, Jake is a frequent contributor to Guitar Player magazine’s ‘Lessons’ section. He has over 30 published articles with coinciding YouTube instructional videos. Guitar Player has coined him the “Jazz ambassador to the non-jazz world”. Readers can visit the Official Hey Jazz Guy website for articles and tutorial videos. Recent master classes and clinics include Jazztravaganza at the Clarion Performing Arts Center in Lake Jackson, Texas and Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA.,Women In Jazz in Halle, Germany and a faculty position at the Swarnhaboomi Academy of Music in Chennai, India.

After winning of the Grand Prize in 2006 for the Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition in Switzerland, he was invited back in 2007 to open for John Scofield and Medeski, Martin and Wood. Jake is an alum of the prestigious Berklee College of Music and recipient of several performance scholarships.

Aout Trevor Gordon Hall

From the outskirts of Philadelphia PA, Trevor is an acoustic instrumentalist whose compositions range in style from driving rhythms to soft melodic phrases.  Trevor caught the eye of 9 time Grammy winning producer Joe Nicolo (James Taylor, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, etc.), who produced two of Trevor’s releases entitled “Finding My Way” and “Let Your Heart Be Light”.  These releases garnered high reviews and gave Trevor such opportunities as recording with bass virtuoso Michael Manring as well as continuing to share the stage with artists such as Pat Martino, Phil Keaggy, Don Ross, Andy Mckee, Alex Skolnick, The California Guitar Trio, Billy Cobham etc.  Trevor has collaborated with various builders to redesign an instrument called the kalimba, which mounts to the surface of the guitar.  Compositions inspired by the pairing of the two instruments can be heard in Trevor’s Candyrat Records debut “Entelechy”.  Upon its release, this album climbed the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts, as well as YouTube Top Commented/Top Favorited/Most Discussed categories with the release of videos.  His music has been featured on various national radio stations including NPR and television networks including NBC.  Trevor performs throughout the USA, Canada, and Europe.

“…In the genre of intriguing guitar players Trevor really stands out. His music is both soothing and challenging…”
Graham Nash – Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and well known member of the group Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

“…Creative imagination resides, as well as flourishes within certain artists, and it certainly does so in Trevor Gordon Hall. Ingenuity is something that always causes surprise, and this gentleman’s abilities are totally exceptional…”
Pat Martino – Legendary Jazz Guitarist

“…Trevor is very skilled…his compositions are beautiful, atmospheric, open and heartfelt…I admire him very much…”
Tommy Emmanuel, Award Winning guitar virtuoso

SUPPORTS OTONOWA’S
JULY 14, 2014
TOUR TO TOHOKU !
Dear friend and supporter of musicFor most of us, the March 2011 devastating tsunami and earthquake with loss of 19,000 lives and more than 300,000 displaced in Northern Japan is a distant memory. Yet, for those in the Tohoku region where the quake had its greatest impact, many lives are still on hold as communities are being rebuilt.Takahiro Dai is a high school trumpet-playing student who lost contact with his family for two days after the earthquake and still has not been able to return to his home in Otsuchi.  Last March, on the second anniversary of the quake, Takahiro, along with his family, were treated to an uplifting Otonowa jazz concert, and he was able to participate in jazz clinics with his fellow students.
Otonowa, a fiscally-sponsored project of the San Jose Jazz Festival, is a jazz quartet (of Japanese U.S. and Japanese-born musicians) led by renown drummer Akira Tana, with Masaru Koga on reeds, percussion and traditional Japanese instruments, Art Hirahara on piano and Noriyuki Ken Okada on bass, with guest vocalist Saki Kono. The group came together after the earthquake to raise funds for earthquake victims. One of their concerts was live streamed, so those in Japan could participate and understand the extent of support they had from Americans.  Out of this effort grew Otonowa (Sound Circle), a recording project of jazz interpretations of traditional Japanese folk songs. On the third anniversary of the earthquake, Otonowa toured the Tohoku region and gave community concerts and clinics to high school students like Takaki. Most of the participants families were still living in temporary housing with their futures uncertain. Many of those listening were brought to tears upon hearing the folk songs, which provided an emotional connection to their homes and villages, and were thrilled to receive a copy of the CD.As a result of the continuing interest in having Otonowa return, Otonowa is planning a return tour in July 2014 to the ravaged Tohoku region to play a week’s worth of concerts and clinics.

As before, the musicians will donate their time for the Tohoku concerts and clinics. Otonowa is currently fundraising to cover their costs. So far over $5000 of the $20,000 budget has been raised. We hope you might be able to contribute any amount to get us closer to our goal.

Louis Armstrong’s ‘Hello, Dolly!”
Knocks the Beatles off Billboard’s #1
Louis Armstrong House Museum and the Museum of the Moving Image join forces and celebrate the 50th anniversary.
On Saturday, May 10th, 2014 the Louis Armstrong House Museum and the Museum of the Moving Image will host a dessert reception and special screening of the beloved film musical Hello, Dolly! in honor of Ambassador Satch knocking the Fab Four off Billboards’ #1 spot at the height of Beatlemania. In December 1963, Pops was selling out concerts worldwide and appearing on television, but he hadn’t stepped into a recording studio in two years. That changed on December 3, 1963 when he recorded the title song of a Broadway musical that hadn’t even opened yet,Hello, Dolly! Armstrong agreed to record it as a favor to his manager Joe Glaser, who was close to some people involved in the show. According to Glaser, five record companies turned him down before Kapp Records agreed to record it. Armstrong didn’t think much of it, complaining during the session, “You mean to tell me you called me out here to do this?” They recorded it but everyone there was much more excited about the other tune recorded that day, “A Lot of Livin’ to Do,” from Bye Bye Birdie. When Louis and the All Stars were done, session producer Mickey Kapp realized the tune needed a little extra oomph. He called for banjoist Tony Gottuso to come to the studio and overdub an introduction. Once that was done, Kapp added a near-discrete layer of strings in the background. Louis left the studio and continued his grueling life of one-nighters, ending up in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Bermuda before the year was up.After Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway, Kapp released Louis’s single. Surprisingly, it landed on the charts. However, Louis and the All Stars had no recollection of the song itself. After hearing people shout for “Hello, Dolly!” at a live show, Louis finally turned to bassist Arvell Shaw and asked, “What the hell is ‘Hello, Dolly!’?” The band had to get a copy of their own recording of the tune to learn it again and performed it in the show; the result was pandemonium.Armstrong’s “Hello, Dolly!” hit number fifteen on the charts in March 1964, which is when he started performing it on TV, first doing an impromptu version on What’s My Line and then a more formal version on The Hollywood Palace.  The four lads from Liverpool invaded America earlier January 1964, boosted by a sensational appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in February. Their “I Want to Hold Your Hand” had been the number-one song in America for seven weeks; it was supplanted by “She Loves You” for two; and then followed by “Can’t Buy Me Love” in the number one spot. But in the middle of this seemingly unstoppable stretch, 14 weeks, the Beatles were finally knocked off the top of the charts on May 9 by the nearly 63-year-old trumpeter.  It was a miracle of sorts and to this day, Louis remains the oldest artist to attain a number one pop hit. The Beatles reclaimed the throne shortly after but “Hello, Dolly!’ went on to be one of the biggest selling records of 1964 and the biggest hit of Armstrong’s lifetime.Michael Cogswell, Executive Director of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, observes that, “’Hello, Dolly’ is a splendid example of Louis as musical alchemist.  It’s not a particularly great song, but Louis knocks it out of the park.  Throughout his career, from ‘On a Coconut Island’ in the 1930s to ‘Hello, Dolly’ and “What a Wonderful World’ in the 1960s, Louis had a masterful ability to take a tin-pan alley ditty and transform it into timeless art.”

Barbara Streisand added on Satchmo,”He was a sweet, gentle man. I enjoyed working with him. My first booking agent, for nightclubs, was Joe Glaser. I was so impressed that he was Louis Armstrong’s agent too.”

The film version of Hello, Dolly! was directed by the legendary dancer and choreographer Gene Kelly, and stars Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau.  The film screening at the Museum of the Moving Image’s magnificent Sumner M. Redstone Theater, includes a dessert reception and special presentation by Ricky Riccardi, Archivist of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, who will present rare footage of the great Louis Armstrong’s performances prior to the feature.  The reception begins on Saturday, May 10th, 2014 at 1:00 pm and the screening begins at 2:00 pm.  The Museum of Moving Image is located at 36-01 35th Ave, Queens, NY 11106.Tickets are $12 and include admission to the Museum of the Moving Image and complimentary museum pass to the Louis Armstrong House Museum. Members of both the Museum of the Moving Image and the Louis Armstrong House Museum enjoy free admission but should register in advance. Antonio Adolfo grew up in a musical family in Rio de Janeiro (his mother was a violinist in the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra), and began his studies at the age of seven. At seventeen he was already a professional musician. His teachers include Eumir Deodato and the great Nadia Boulanger in Paris. During the 60’s he led his own trio and toured with singers Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento. Adolfo wrote tunes that gained great success and have been recorded by such artists as Sérgio Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Herb Alpert, Earl Klugh, Dionne Warwick, and others. He won International Song Contests on two occasions besides several awards. As a musician and arranger AA has worked with some of the most representative Brazilian names, besides having released more than 25 albums under his name. His most recent studio recordings include Antonio Adolfo e Carol Saboya Ao Vivo/ Live (2007), Antonio Adolfo and Carol Saboya Lá e Cá/Here and There (2010), Chora Baião (2011), Finas Misturas (2013), Rio Choro Jazz (2014).
Rio, Choro, Jazz…, the most recent album by Antonio Adolfo is a tribute to Brazilian legendary pianist and composer Ernesto Nazareth.
Virtuoso instrumentalist and composer Hendrik Meurkens began his career in Germany playing vibes.  At 19, he heard Toots Thielemans play harmonica, which totally changed his musical life. His career has taken him from Brazil to Germany, then throughout the European continent where he became a pivotal force on the studio and jazz scene, performing, composing, recording, and touring extensively with his own ensembles as well as with visiting legends Harry Sweets Edison and Buddy Tate. In 1989, he returned to Brazil to record his first album as a leader, “Samba Importado”. In 1992, a trip to California led to his signing with the Concord label, and the resulting six recordings established him as the first major new voice on the harmonica since Toots Thielemans. He moved to New York in 1992 where he has lived ever since.  His 24 CDs have received rave reviews and strong airplay, and established his immediately recognizable style of Brazilian Jazz. Critics and the jazz listening public alike have recognized Meurkens’ incredible talent, listing him repeatedly in the Downbeat and Jazziz Polls. Meurkens has worked with Ray Brown, Paquito D’Rivera, Oscar Castro-Neves, Herb Ellis, Herbie Mann, James Moody,  Charlie Byrd, Jimmy Cobb, Ivan Lins, Monty Alexander, Manfredo Fest, Herb Ellis, Dori Caymmi, Toninho Horta, Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Buddy Tate, Joyce and Astrud Gilberto.
