At the tender age of 12, young vocalist Barbara Levy Daniels was auditioning for ABC Paramount Records. Its president had invited no less a personage than Ray Charles to listen in and give an opinion. “Sign her right away” was The Genius’ verdict. That was over 50 years ago, followed by a number of singles and a 30 year practice in psychotherapy. Over the past 15 years, Barbara managed to find the time to create two highly acclaimed albums and now offers further testimony to Ray’s endorsement with her new CD Love Lost and Found. With a voice of liquid gold, Barbara fully demonstrates a quality of all truly great singers – absolute confidence in both her instrument and the manner in which she wields it. On this CD, she takes on 13 classics from the Great American Songbook, and in her early champion’s manner, she makes each of these often-performed pieces entirely her own. Her vocal style here can be comfortably compared to the great saxophone song interpreters – like Hawkins, Webster and Young – in using the lyrics as a launching point for her musical interpretation. They inspire the story she tells, but she’s never confined by them. The storytelling essence of Barbara’s artistry is explained by her statement: “While I listen to life stories by day, I sing about life stories when I perform.” Full-bodied and resonant, her voice is highly emotive, often marked by the type of cry that is heard in the styles of Johnny Hodges and Gene Ammons, subtly adding to the emotional impact without even a hint of affectation. Never even remotely straining to hit each tone directly in its heart, she roots in there and allows the resonance to expand outward in a powerful aural pastiche. While Barbara does not employ her scatting style on this CD, the music is unquestionably jazz. What sets the non-scatting jazz vocalist apart from a regular singer of songs are an inherent sense of rhythmic creativity and interpretative freedom interacting with a supporting group that provides an environment for expressive development. All of that is in full bloom on Love Lost and Found. The ensemble is comprised of extraordinary musicians who are not only topflight artists, but who also understand the subtleties demanded by their supporting roles and how to bring total creativity to the musical concept. The empathy here is so powerful that they sound like they’ve all been playing with Barbara for many years. Pianist John di Martino is always fully in sync with Barbara’s vision at each moment, prodding, enhancing and embracing each note and phrase and never falling into the obvious choices that can occur in vocal accompaniment. Bassist Boris Kozlov’s deeply wooded tone provides the heartbeat of the music – his heavily syncopated rhythmic mastery often providing the nucleus around which the track is built. His full-bodied sound contrasts beautifully with Barbara’s voice and his phrasing both propels and supports the music. Drummer Shinnosuke Takahashi blends sublime subtlety with rhythmic dynamism that anchors each piece perfectly. Cornetist Warren Vaché is present on eight tracks, usually muted, and a master of lyricism and impeccable taste whether playing obbligato or soloing. Guitarist Paul Meyers adds zest, sparkle and color to three pieces as well. Vaché and di Martino share all the solos, always succinct and in sharp focus. The repertoire has been artfully selected from pieces composed between 1927 and 1944, but there is not a wisp of nostalgia or obviousness in the interpretations of these beloved songs. The feeling is highly contemporary and in the moment; immediate and fresh. Also serving as musical director and arranger, di Martino has crafted 13 gems; each cut and designed as a unique piece of music that is also integrated seamlessly into the album’s essence. Irving Berlin’s delicate ballad I Got Lost in His Arms showcases Barbara’s mastery of time and space as she uses syncopation, lingers tantalizingly behind the beat and slides into rubato time at will, smearing and spreading tones while swirling around the rhythm section. Berlin’s Say It Isn’t So is given a Bossa Nova treatment, with guitar and piano playing off each other nicely over subtle dynamic bass and drums and Barbara’s voice dancing within the joyful setting. A Brazilian feel is again on tap for Rodgers and Hart’s Where or When, a delicious samba with the guitar-enhanced rhythm section spreading a gossamer blanket for Barbra’s voice and di Martino’s solo. Meyers’ guitar takes a Freddie Green-ish angle on Mills, Hudson and Delange’s infectious Moonglow, a delightfully syncopated, easy bouncer enhanced by Takahashi’s whisk-broom shuffle drumming – respectfully evoking a modern feel for an older era. A similarly transportive mode is created for It’s the Talk of the Town (Symes, Neilburg and Livingston). A torchy, grooving ballad with gently stride-ish piano and a muted cornet solo. There’s an afterhours feel of musicians playing for each other with the listeners as fortunate bystanders. That late night vibe is also on hand for two other ballads. Carmichael and Washington’s lovely The Nearness of You is a touching piece with voice and piano reminiscent of some of those great Lester Young/Teddy Wilson recordings. Mean to Me (Turk and Ahlert) is a ballad in a bluesy swing groove with Barbara’s sultry vocal prodded by di Martino’s piano and a delightful muted Vaché solo. A deeper blue is the tone for Ann Ronell’s Willow Weep for Me. Wailing cornet with di Martino’s slow barrelhouse left hand and Otis Spann-flavored right sets a flawless blues mood for Barbara’s shout – down home, uptown style. Rodgers and Hart’s My Heart Stood Still is a smoothly swinging item embellished by mellow cornet. Straightforward swing is the theme for Burke and Van Heusen’s It Could Happen to You with Kozlov’s syncopated walking and Vaché’s obbligato around Barbara’s deeply grooved vocal. Comes Love (Stept, Tobias and Brown) is a jaunty swinger – playful, straightforward and delightfully rhythmic. Warren and Gordon’s There Will Never Be Another You kicks it up a notch, with Barbara in full swing mode, Vaché on open cornet and the band surging on all cylinders. The album closes with Lewis and Coots’ For All We Know, a powerfully evocative piece stoked by Takahashi’s Bolero-like drumming. Pianist Antonio Adolfo and harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens received the Brazilian International Press Award this past weekend in Fort Lauderdale (FL) for Best Show of 2013. Antonio
Adolfo also was presented the Lifetime Achievement for his outstanding contribution to Brazilian music.

Antonio Adolfo grew up in a musical family in Rio de Janeiro (his mother was a violinist in the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra), and began his studies at the age of seven. At seventeen he was already a professional musician. His teachers include Eumir Deodato and the great Nadia Boulanger in Paris. During the 60’s he led his own trio and toured with singers Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento. Adolfo wrote tunes that gained great success and have been recorded by such artists as Sérgio Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Herb Alpert, Earl Klugh, Dionne Warwick, and others. He won International Song Contests on two occasions besides several awards. As a musician and arranger AA has worked with some of the most representative Brazilian names, besides having released more than 25 albums under his name. His most recent studio recordings include Antonio Adolfo e Carol Saboya Ao Vivo/ Live (2007), Antonio Adolfo and Carol Saboya Lá e Cá/Here and There (2010), Chora Baião (2011), Finas Misturas (2013), Rio Choro Jazz (2014).
Rio, Choro, Jazz…, the most recent album by Antonio Adolfo is a tribute to Brazilian legendary pianist and composer Ernesto Nazareth.
Virtuoso instrumentalist and composer Hendrik Meurkens began his career in Germany playing vibes. At 19, he heard Toots Thielemans play harmonica, which totally changed his musical life. His career has taken him from Brazil to Germany, then throughout the European continent where he became a pivotal force on the studio and jazz scene, performing, composing, recording, and touring extensively with his own ensembles as well as with visiting legends Harry Sweets Edison and Buddy Tate. In 1989, he returned to Brazil to record his first album as a leader, “Samba Importado”. In 1992, a trip to California led to his signing with the Concord label, and the resulting six recordings established him as the first major new voice on the harmonica since Toots Thielemans. He moved to New York in 1992 where he has lived ever since. His 24 CDs have received rave reviews and strong airplay, and established his immediately recognizable style of Brazilian Jazz. Critics and the jazz listening public alike have recognized Meurkens’ incredible talent, listing him repeatedly in the Downbeat and Jazziz Polls. Meurkens has worked with Ray Brown, Paquito D’Rivera, Oscar Castro-Neves, Herb Ellis, Herbie Mann, James Moody, Charlie Byrd, Jimmy Cobb, Ivan Lins, Monty Alexander, Manfredo Fest, Herb Ellis, Dori Caymmi, Toninho Horta, Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Buddy Tate, Joyce and Astrud Gilberto.

During the recording of a song where the tenors succeeded on high tempo, he unexpectedly passed the clarinet. This solo thirty-two measures led to his being classified clarinetist “number one” by the magazine Down Beat in 1966. Like what … It took then honor this distinction by simply becoming the best clarinetist in the world.
What confirms once again with this record a duet with pianist Roger Kellaway, an old friend, and here and there adding a cellist, Doug Coffin. The sound of Eddie Daniels, woody and sweet, tastes like licorice, her keen is powerful but never loud; classical clarinetists must envy. His phrasing is so miraculous precision swing. As, in addition, it has the melodic imagination and unlimited invention, listening, charmed as much as flabbergasted, to the tunes of Duke Ellington carefully selected (Creole Love Call, Perdido, Sophisticated Lady, Mood Indigo) and excellent original compositions of both musicians. The Academy of jazz comes to crowning honor this disc as the best of 2013, other prices ranging Vincent and Cécile Peirani McLorin Salvant. – Michel Contat

Guitarist, vocalist Perry Beekman is pleased to announce his new project, “Bewitched: Perry Beekman Sings and Plays Rodgers and Hart” @ The Metropolitan Room Friday, March 28th 9:30 PM.
“Bewitched” is the follow up to Perry’s 2013 debut release “So in Love: Perry Beekman Sings And Plays Cole Porter.” Here’s what Perry has to say about his new project:
The collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart was an unlikely one. Rodgers was organized and businesslike, while Hart was a notoriously unreliable alcoholic. Yet in spite of their divergent personalities, their collaboration produced some of the most beloved entries in the Great American Songbook. I leave it to their contemporaries to elaborate further: Tuneful and tasty, schmaltzy and smart. It’s smooth! It’s smart! It’s Rodgers! It’s Hart!” – Cole Porter The meticulously crafted music of Rodgers combined with Hart’s dazzling lyrics to produce over five hundred songs, populating twenty-eight theatrical productions and nine movies. This recording contains fifteen of my favorites, and I hope some of yours too. The music on this CD is a combination of carefully planned, well-rehearsed arrangements, along with some good old fashioned “blowing.” (As we jazz folk like to call improvisation.) My goal has been to create a setting for each tune that helps express its essential nature. Here are some examples of what I mean: – The enormously clever lyrical phrases of “I Wish I Were in Love Again” come one after another at an alarming rate. They have a percussive quality that led me to the vamp style introduction and accompaniment of the arrangement. In the instrumental break, I tried to mimic the phrasing musically with the guitar and piano. – I find the melody of “Wait Till You See Her” to be extremely powerful in its simple beauty. So, for the instrumental section, I decided to showcase the melody with Lou’s artful bowing over a re-harmonized background provided by Peter and myself. – I selected the bare bones guitar/voice treatment of “It Never Entered My Mind” to enhance the quality of the song’s deeply personal reckoning of love gone wrong. – My semi-classical, instrumental treatment of “Blue Room” was inspired by the carefully measured intervallic steps of its melody. I envisioned the arrangement as collaboration between Richard Rodgers and J.S. Bach! As I continue to explore the guitar, piano, bass trio format, new possibilities manifest themselves. I’ve come to think of my trio as a little big band, and have been trying to expand the palette of musical textures and colors available to explore the great beauty of the timeless classics that we play. (Including, but not limited to using my guitar as a bongo drum!) Still, let there be no mistake; our goals here are to share the bountiful riches of the extraordinary Rodgers and Hart, swing hard, and to get you tapping your feet and smiling. Once again, I have the privilege of recording with my working trio, featuring Peter Tomlinson on piano and Lou Pappas on bass. ‘Ralph Ellison: A Man and His Records’

Please come see our new Ralph Ellison exhibit, which has received rave notices in The New Yorker and listings in The New York Times. Based on the museum’s acquisition of the recordings that Ellison listened to while he wrote his masterpieces (including Invisible Man), the exhibit blends the music and the albums with his words, presented in thrilling and creative visual juxtapositions. As you listen to the music in the exhibit, it is as though you are visiting with Ellison as he is writing. In addition, our interactive kiosk offers rare videos of Ellison, along with interviews created especially for the exhibit with scholars such as Stanley Crouch.

One of the greatest American novelists, Ralph Ellison, is also one of our greatest writers about music, as evidenced by the volume “Living with Music,” which collects his writings about jazz. Ellison’s life with music is thrust to the fore by a noteworthy exhibit that just opened at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, “Ralph Ellison: A Man and His Records,” on the occasion of his centennial (with an asterisk: his biographer, Arnold Rampersad, gives Ellison’s birth date as March 1, 1913). Ellison, who died in 1994, was a big collector of jazz records-indeed, of records of many kinds of music. The museum has acquired his collection, which is the centerpiece of the exhibit.
To capture the appeal and the delight of the show, with its selection of citations from Ellison’s work and evocative archival images, it’s worth glancing at just how Ellison lived with music…. ‘Jazz: The Experimenters,’ a 1965 television broadcast of performances by the bands of Cecil Taylor and Charles Mingus, with commentary by Ralph Ellison and the jazz critic Martin Williams, currently on view at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem as part of an exhibition devoted to Ellison’s record collection, would be worth the trip, even in the absence of the enticing and evocative installation of artifacts, texts, and images that surrounds it. The broadcast is a major document in the contextualized history of jazz and its performance.

Born in Morocco and raised in Israel and France, Albare first worked as a musician in France, before emigrating to Australia at the age of 27. He is not only well known as a jazz musician but has maintained a highly successful career as one of Australia’s most prominent musician entrepreneurs. Born Alexander Emil Caiola, September 7, 1920, in Jersey City, New Jersey his ability as a guitarist to play in many styles; jazz, country, rock, western, and pop made him an in-demand session player in the busy recording scene centered in New York City during the 1950s and 60s.
As a sideman and a leader he’s appeared on over 50 albums and has worked with some of the biggest stars in the business including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Percy Faith, Buddy Holly, Mitch Miller, and Tony Bennett to name a few.
His guitar work is heard not only on many pop hits of the day, but many TV and film soundtracks too: The Magnificent Seven, From Russia with Love, Bonanza, The Ballad of Paladin, The Rebel and Gunslinger being some of the more notable ones from that era.
Still active into his 9th decade he tours on a regular basis with pop vocal legend Steve Lawrence.
Frank Vignolais one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. To find a theme for her latest album, veteran vocalist Carol Fredette needed only to look at her living room wall. There hangs a poster for the 1950 film No Sad Songs for Me starring Margaret Sullavan. Fredette and Sullavan seem kindred spirits: exceptionally gifted artists, masters of subtlety who remain vastly under appreciated. Sullavan staunchly refused to be victimized. Indeed, she became infamous in Hollywood as the only actor able to intimidate tyrannical MGM pasha Louis B. Mayer. Across more than four decades, Fredette has sung her fair share of torch songs about romantic victims. No more, she decided. With David Finck, in his third session as her producer and bassist (and first as arranger), she chose 14 tunes that offer more empowered and optimistic views of life and love.At this point in her career, Fredette suggests a potent blend of Elaine Stritch’s gin-soaked sophistication and Diana Krall’s smoky warmth. In other words, she exudes style and substance.  “Jane Monheit Sings Irving Berlin Arrangements by Mary Ann McSweeney”The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that jazz vocalist Jane Monheit will be performing a concert of Irving Berlin material with an extraordinary trio, led by arranger/bass player Mary Ann McSweeney, on Monday, June 2 at 7pm.
Teaming up for a third time with a dynamic band and vocal accompanists, gifted jazz vocalist Jane Monheit will sing an upbeat portfolio of Irving Berlin classics to new arrangements by bassist Mary Ann McSweeney. After two successful gigs performing the swinging version of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” this is just another opportunity to delve into the amazing compositions of Irving Berlin with a twist. Monheit’s stellar backup band for the evening will be Mary Ann McSweeney (bassist, arranger), Jim Ridl (pianist),and Alvester Garnett (drums).
Grammy Award-nominated Jane Monheit has been a leading light in both the jazz and cabaret worlds since emerging as a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s 1998 vocal competition. In addition to her own recordings, she has worked alongside the likes of Terence Blanchard, Tom Harrell, and Ivan Lins. Monheit is touring in support ofher album The Heart of the Matter, which she says is an especially satisfying collaboration with Grammy Award-winning producer Gil Goldstein, who has previously worked with such giants as Wayne Shorter, Gil Evans, and Pat Metheny. The pair first joined forces for part of Monheit’s 2009 album The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me.
 Mary Ann McSweeneyMcSweeney has played with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Joanne Brackeen and Lee Konitz, Gil Goldstein and Bucky Pizzarelli, and played for famous conductors, Leonard Bernstein, Lalo Schifrin, and John Williams. She has performed with Renee Rosness, Vic Juris, Ken Peplowski, Dennis Mackrel, Lewis Nash and Larry Goldings. Maryann performed with the Maiden Voyage and Diva Big Bands and performed with her quintet at the Sexial Jazz Festival in Portugal and the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center.
Ms. McmSweeney arranged for and recorded with Warner Bros. Artist, Lea Delaria. She toured Europe and performed with David Krakouer’s Klezmer Madness and three time Tony award winning vocalist Audra McDonald. Her orchestrations can be heard on Chita Rivera’s new Cd entitled “Now I Swing.”
Along with being full time professional bassist in New York City, McSweeney is on the faculty for the Middle School Jazz Academy at Lincoln Center and the New York Jazz Workshop.
She recently performed at the White House with the Eli Yamin Quintet for a special event. In March she will be the musical director/arranger for a show at Birdland in New York City featuring Jane Monheit. The program includes selections from the Cole Porter musical, “Anything Goes.”
