THE PLEASURES OF BEING OUT OF STEP
Notes on the Life of Nat Hentoff

A film by David L. Lewis
Featuring the Sublime Music of Duke Ellington,
Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charles MingusOpens June 25 in New York at IFC Center
Opens July 4 in Los Angeles at Laemmle Theatres
Nat Hentoff is one of the enduring voices of the last 65 years, a writer who championed jazz as an art form and who also led the rise of ‘alternative’ journalism in America.  This unique documentary wraps the themes of liberty, identity and free expression around a historical narrative that stretches from the Great Depression to the Patriot Act.At the core of the film are three extraordinary, intimate conversations with Hentoff.  Commentary and perspective are offered through additional interviews with such luminaries as Amiri Baraka, Stanley Crouch, Floyd Abrams, Aryeh Neier and Dan Morgenstern. Interwoven through it all is the sublime music of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Bob Dylan, along with never-before-seen photographs and archival footage of these artists and other cultural figures at the height of their  powers.WINNER! Metropolis Grand Jury Prize, DocNYC 2013“Brisk and engaging. Hentoff comes off as an amused, amusing, endlessly fascinating man, one with more stories to tell than he could have fit into his almost three dozen books or his half-century of columns. He’s a great pleasure to watch, to listen to, and to read, even when you couldn’t disagree with him more.” – Alan Scherstuhl, The Village Voice“A sharp-looking and enjoyable doc that celebrates the writer’s legacy.”

Veronneau, with Hendrik Meurkens & Chuck Redd
Strathmore Jazz Samba Festival finale
Acoustic world-jazz combo Veronneauplay the finale of the Jazz Samba Project festival at Washignton DC area’s Strathmore performing arts center, on Sunday June 8, 3:30pm. The band will be joined on stage by Hendrick Meurkens (harmonica) and Chuck Redd (vibes and drums) for the finale to this two-week festival. The Strathmore Jazz Samba Project has brought packed houses to performance, film, symposium and exhibition events in celebration of the mile-stone 1962 Jazz Sambaalbum by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd which merged Brazilian bossa nova with jazz, bringing it into the global mainstream, opening the door and building the audience for future Brazilian jazz collaborations. The festival was co-curated by Veronneau guitarist Ken Avis and the Strathmore’s Georgina Javor and featured the world premiere of a Bossa Nova documentary directed by Bret Primack. A festival symposium will brings together Buddy Deppenschmidt and Ed Greene, one of the original drummers and the engineer of Jazz Samba – the only remaining members of the team which created the album in just 3 hours, recorded live in a Washington DC church. Sergio Mendez and Eliane Elias, Duduka de Foncesca, Romero Lubambo, and DC area Brazilian jazz performers are featured at the festival. The Felix Grant Jazz Archive of University of DC mounted an exhibition, Bringing Bossa Nova to the United States, which features archive materials and audio visual displays from the archive of the legendary DJ.The festival was inspired by Veronneau’s 2012 album release Jazz Samba Project which climbed high in the jazz charts, celebrating the golden anniversary of the Getz/Byrd work. Ken Avis explains; “In preparing for our Jazz Samba Project recording we became increasingly drawn into the story behind Jazz Sambaand the influence it had on jazz and popular music. I had the chance to research and write a number of articles for publication in the US and Europe and to talk with Buddy Deppenschmidt and to interview the late Joe Byrd…which eventually led to the documentary movie project. The story and the community of people I met in doing the research just kept growing. The Strathmore made it possible to bring everything together and to further ignite interest in the music of Brazil and the album which provide a catalyst for bringing it to world attention. Bossa nova and Brazilian jazz have now become standards of the musical repertoire”.Veronneau’s show in the Strathmore main hall will be free to the public. In addition to featuring special guests Meurkens and Redd, the Washington DC Latin American choir Choral Cantigas will perform a solo piece by Jobim and perform a song with the band.
What the press says about Veronneau’s Jazz Samba Project CDAlong with Esperanza Spalding and Gretchen Palato…Veronneau should be added to the list of musicians who’ve taken on the bossa nova genre with such a unique charm. – The SamplerI listened to this record perhaps ten times and for me it’s one of the more addictive samba recordings released in the last several years. Welcome to the land of rhythm and groove as this is the music you feel in your hips and hear with your feet. This quartet is on point every step of the way…Veronneau is the jazz vocal version of the sexy little black dress. 5 Stars! – Critical JazzVeronneau not only captures the spirit of Jazz Samba but also of the period that followed….a cushion of sound that invites the listener into a New York coffee shop in the early 60’s, her silky voice and relaxed delivery draw us in. (Best Jazz CD’s of 2012 list) Capitalbop The powerful and sweet voice of Lynn Veronneau, the accurate and deeply felt interpretation of the guitar players Ken Avis and David Rosenblatt, and the musical richness of the guest musicians make each of the songs on this album a tribute to Brazilian music – 4 Stars! – The World Music ReportEvery track on the albums manages to sound uniquely crafted and is expertly performed. Eclectic and refreshingly energetic, “Jazz Samba Project” is enjoyable and musically impressive; style and substance combined. The best bossa nova album of 2012.– BNova MusicMore information about Veronneau is available at www.VeronneauMusic.com

The New York-based saxophonist Craig Yaremko, along with organist Matt King, drummer Jonathon Peretz, and special guest guitarist Vic Juris, push the limits of the tradition while displaying a powerful group chemistry. The band swings hard on originals by both Yaremko and King, and puts fresh spins on jazz classics by Monk, Strayhorn, Hubbard and Waller. CYO3 is Yaremko’s debut on OA2 Records and his forth as a leader, following his recording “Sync,” which was a Top Ten pick from New York’s Hot House Magazine for release.

“‘Sync’ reveals an artist who…already has a powerful musical personality.  Yaremko’s originals, which touch on the jazz tradition while also looking forward, are rife with musical adventures. Likewise, his covers of such songs as Lennon-McCartney’s “Michelle” offer fresh, open-minded approaches…”-Zan Stewart, Newark Star-Ledger
“It is hard to imagine how many ultra-talented musicians lie in the weeds, with no big-budget record contract or nationwide touring schedule that allows them to reach the masses. Discovering one is like finding a pearl in your oyster — and the pearl on Sync is the multiple reed-playing Craig Yaremko…Craig Yaremko is a jack of many instruments, and here he is the master of all — and a darn good writer and arranger to boot.”
-John Cizik, Jazz Improv NY (now Jazz Inside)

Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 25 CD’s as a leader to date), co-leading The Stryker/Slagle Band, Blue To The Bone or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”
Dave Stryker was voted once again into the 2013 Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls. Besides his own 25 recordings Stryker has appeared as a sideman or producer on over 100 others. As a composer he has recorded and published over 130 original compositions. He is involved in passing it on, and was recently hired as the new Jazz Guitar instructor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
. … One of the most joyous feels around. -Pat Metheny
