David Weiss November Newsletter

David Weiss Sextet at Smoke Jazz Club Tonight, Wednesday, November 22 and at the Jazz Forum on Sunday, December 3

In January of this year, I took my Sextet into the studio to record our first new album in nearly 10 years, the follow-up to our critically acclaimed previous album “When Words Fail.” This was also the first time the group has had personnel changes in nearly 2o years.  The record was originally slated for release this month but the release date has been pushed back until next year due to unforeseen circumstances. The Smoke date was supposed to be our CD Release party but now, hopefully, it will serve as a preview of our new material  Joining me for these dates are Myron Walden- Alto Sax, Ron Blake- Tenor Sax, Victor Gould- Piano, Eric Wheeler (Smoke), Tyrone Allen ll (Jazz Forum)- Bass and E.J. Strickland- Drums. I hope to see you there.

The Cookers at Jimmy’s Jazz & Blues Club in Portsmouth, NH This Weekend November 24 & 25.

The Cookers will be doing our last performances of 2023 at Jimmy’s Jazz & Blues Club in Portsmouth, NH on Friday & Saturday, November 24 & 25. Jimmy’s is still a relatively new club with a wonderful live room with excellent sound and great food. We are really looking forward to this return engagement after our sold out shows during this same weekend last year.
2024 is shaping up to be a busy year for the band with two tours of the West Coast and a European tour in the works already plus return engagements to Birdland and Dizzy’s in New York. We also have our first live record in the can as well, recorded a Dizzy’s Club at Jazz @ Lincoln Center, slated for release in the Spring of 2024.

And in case you missed it…..

After almost 15 years together and six critically acclaimed albums, The Cookers finally get their fist feature in a major Jazz magazine and it’s the cover. Thanks to Down Beat Magazine for the coverage and support. You can read the article here

David Weiss February Newsletter
The Cookers To Tour The West Coast

The Cookers return to the West Coast for a brief run that includes stops at some of our favorite haunts and a first time visit to a new (to us) venue. We start on February 20 at Yoshi’s in Oakland. The Cookers have been performing at Yoshi’s since even before we officially became The Cookers. We played Yoshi’s in 2005, with one of the previous versions of the band before we solidified our personnel in 2007. For that run, we had Billy Harper, James Spaulding, Charles Tolliver, me, John Hicks, Dwayne Burno and Roy McCurdy. Quite a band, no? I’ll never know for sure because I broke my arm and missed the entire engagement. The point is we’ve been playing Yoshi’s for years and have enjoyed bringing our music to their wonderful fans, one of the most solid fan bases we have in the world I think. From there, we go to Los Angeles on February 21 to do the Jazz Bakery at the Moss Theatre. On February 22, we play the Saville Theatre in San Diego. It’s a  fundraising concert for KSDS Jazz 88.3 so please come out and help support Jazz radio. We return to the Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay on February 23 for our 2nd appearance at their long running Jazz series. February 28 finds us in Orem, Utah at The Noorda’s Center’s Concert Hall at Utah Valley University.
In March, we will embark on a two week European tour with stops in Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland, Norway, Sweden and the UK.  We will also be headlining several  prominent Jazz Festivals in the US throughout the year including (so far) New Orleans (May 2), Spoleto (May 28), Rochester (June 20) and Monterey (September 26).
We will also be going into the studio and recording our first album (and I’m told it will be an actual album) in 4 years.
I will have more details about all this in the next newsletter.
Thanks for reading and thanks for your support.

The Cookers to Tour the West Coast Headlining the Playboy Jazz Festival and the SF Jazz Festival

The Cookers kick off a West Coast tour headlining the Playboy Jazz Festival on June 9. This will be the 2nd time the group has performed at the Festival and we are really looking forward to retuning. We will also be returning to many of our favorite haunts on this tour by appearing at Jazz Alley in Seattle, the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix and the Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque. Our tour concludes with a return to one of our favorite cities and favorites venues, appearing at Miner Auditorium as part of the SF Jazz Festival on June 18. We are working on a lot of new material for this tour, preparing for our next recording, our sixth and it’s always an exciting process working on new material with this great band who continue to surprise and astound me.

David Weiss Sextet Embark on Their First Extended North American Tour
After touring extensively with Freddie Hubbard and the New Jazz Composers Octet (2000-2008) and The Cookers (2007 to present) for essentially the bulk of my career, I’ve decided it’s time to focus more of my energies on my Sextet. The first result of my efforts is that I am getting ready to embark on my first ever extensive North American tour with the group. I would like to think of this as the CD release tour for my last Sextet CD  “When Words Fail” that I wasn’t able to get around to until now but it was released 5 years ago and that might be a tough sell. This tour is essentially split into two sections. This first leg will feature J.D. Allen and E.J. Strickland along with Immanuel Wilkins on select dates and some of the finest musicians on the West Coast including Dave Binney, Josh Nelson, Ed Simon, James Mahone and Alex Boneham. The second leg will essentially feature my current working band with Myron Walden, Marcus Strickland, David Bryant, Eric Wheeler and E.J. Strickland. Of all of my various projects, the Sextet might be the one closest to my heart or at least it probably should be as It is the only band that almost exclusively features my own compositions and my own personal vision. I’m really looking forward to playing this music on such a consistent basis for the first time.

The Cookers Hit Cleveland, Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit in April and the new Keystone Korner in May.

The Cookers didn’t really do much performing in 2018 because of the various health problems of some of the band members. Everyone is doing well now though and have recovered from their various ailments, minor and not so minor (and some miraculously so) and are ready to get back to work. So we are back at full strength now and everyone is raring to go with new found energy and a fresh creative spark which means we are working on many new compositions and looking forward to a number of tours in 2019. Our first US tour in 2019 will include return visits to Nighttown in Cleveland, Dakota in Minneapolis and the Jazz Cafe in Detroit. We will also be performing Logan Center at the University of Chicago. In May, we will be among the opening acts to grace the stage at the new Keystone Korner in Baltimore and will also be touring the US again in June including stops at the Playboy Jazz Festival and the SF Jazz Festival. We are also working on a couple of European tours and preparing for a new recording. I will keep you posted about all this in the coming months of course.

The Cookers Are Back!
Performing at Birdland September 4-8

Well, we really never went anywhere but because of varying health problems, we have not been at full strength for a while and have not done a performance with our full personnel intact in around 10 months or so. Everyone is doing well now though and have recovered from their various ailments minor and not so minor (and some miraculously so) and are ready to get back to work. The band will hit the ground running as we are preparing to record a new album in the coming months and will begin touring extensively again in 2019
All- Star Trumpet Summit Celebrating Freddie Hubbard’s 80th Birthday at the Detroit Jazz Festival September 2
After a triumphant performance at the Playboy Jazz Festival back in June,  I will be reconvening this dazzling array of some of the finest trumpet players on the planet, Nicholas Payton, Jeremy Pelt and Randy Brecker, to celebrate trumpet legend Freddie Hubbard’s 80th Birthday at the Detroit Jazz Festival. The Detroit Jazz Festival is one of the foremost Jazz Festivals in this Country and  I believe is the largest free Jazz Festival we have and it’s an honor as always to perform there. We will perform many of Freddie’s greatest compositions that I arranged for 4 trumpets with the crack rhythm section of Xavier Davis, Russell Hall and Roy McCurdy.

The Cookers Tour Europe

The Cookers are embarking on our first European tour in over a year with stops in London, Poznan, Poland, Olomouc, Czech Republic, Prague, Czech Republic, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Vienna, Austria, Neuburg, Germany and Hamburg, Germany.  It will be great to return to some of our favorite haunts like Bimhuis in Amsterdam, Birdland in Neuburg, Germany and Porgy & Bess in Vienna and to some of our favorite cities like Prague and London. We are looking forward to forming new alliances with the likes of the Church of Sound organization in London and the Elbjazz Festival in Hamburg, Germany.David Weiss Sextet

In an ongoing experiment in some of the bigger Jazz cities around the world. I’m going to workshop my Sextet music with some of the finest musicians in said city and present a concert of the music. This time out, I will be doing it in the Bay Area at The Sound Room in Oakalnd on June 7 with some of the finest musicians the area has to offer including James Mahone, Michael Zilber, Adam Schulman, Peter Barsay and Lorca Hart (son of Cookers drummer Billy Hart). I hope all of my Bay Area friends can come out to this one.
More West Coast Dates….
The Healdsburg Jazz Festival with the Festival All-Stars and the Playboy Jazz Festival with a Freddie Hubbard 80th Birthday Celebration
I’m also going to be involved with a few other special projects during this trip to the West Coast. On June 9, I’m returning to Healdsburg Jazz Festival  to perform with some of the Festival’s favorite musicians including George Cables and Billy Hart, my fellow Cookers and other greats like Azar Lawrence, Booby Watson and Essiet Essiet. The Healdsburg Jazz Festival is where The Cookers did their first “official” gig in 2007 with the then just solidified personnel and when the light bulb first went on and told me we had something special here. It will always means a lot to me to return to the great, well curated festival in beautiful Sonoma Valley. Then after that, I will perform at the Playboy Jazz Festival on June 10 with a dazzling array of some of the finest trumpet players on the planet, Nicholas Payton, Jeremy Pelt and Randy Brecker, to celebrate trumpet legend Freddie Hubbard’s 80th Birthday. We will perform many of Freddie’s greatest compositions that I arranged for 4 trumpets with the crack rhythm section of Benny Green, Vicente Archer and Roy McCurdy.
George Cables

I’m happy to report that George’s surgery was successful his recovering is going quite well. He is in great spirits and anxious to get back to music . He is back at the piano and practicing and writing and getting ready to make his next CD. He will be joining The Cookers when we reconvene in September for a week at Birdland September 4-8. We are all looking forward to having George back in the fold. We miss his energy and devotion to the music and even his jokes.

David Weiss Fall Newsletter
Hello everyone,
This month I am spending some time on the West Coast doing a variety of projects. In addition to performing with the bands I am usually associated with, The Cookers and Point of Departure, I will be collaborating with local musicians in the Bay Area and in Los Angeles to put together some special projects in each town. The Cookers Return to Yoshi’s in Oakland and Perform in Salt Lake City for the first time…

The Cookers are returning to one of our homes away from home in one of our favorite cities when we return to Yoshi’s on Sunday October 22. It’s always great to see our many friends and fans in the area. The next day, we hope to meet some new friends and fans as we perform in Salt Lake City, Utah for the first time. We will be performing at the Capitol Theatre and the show is produced and presented by the GAM Foundation, which has been presenting concerts in Salt Lake City for 23 years. It’s organizations like this that keep Jazz alive in various cities around the Country and are vital to the survival of this music.

David Weiss & Point of Departure West Coast CD Release Tour Includes Stops in San Francisco and Los Angeles

Point of Departure will be doing their first West Coast tour November 1-6. It will include stops in the Bay Area and Los Angeles including the Blue Whale in Los Angeles, the Blue Note Napa in Napa and the Black Cat in San Francisco. We will also do an electric, more groove oriented show at the legendary San Francisco funk club The Boom Boom Room.

Wake Up Call has also been out for a few months now and the reviews have been pouring in and have been very positive. See below for some of the nicer things the critics have been saying about this new CD. You can click on the links if you would like to read the whole article.

The collision of old and new continues on the excellent new release from trumpeter David Weiss. This is music of the past given a fresh voice for today. Wake Up Call is a solid example of how limitless modern jazz’s creative arc truly is. But perhaps its true value is the way Weiss & Point of Departure prove that forward-thinking music truly has no expiration date if it’s embraced by musicians who don’t subscribe to the concept of “endings.”

Dave Sumner The Best New Jazz on Bandcamp

Trumpeter David Weiss’ Point of Departure is one of the most exciting power units working today. Having spent more than a decade combining the tonality of In A Silent Way-era Miles and the electric spirituality of classic Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weiss and Point of Departure create a bold jazz noise entirely their own.
The quintet’s excellent new album on Ropeadope, Wake Up Call, features inventive interpretations of material by the likes of John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Tony Williams and unsung Detroit icon Charles Moore.

Ron Hart Observer

Point of Departure has a dual commitment to jazz’s experimental drive and its historical lineage.

Nate Chinen WBGO

Trumpeter David Weiss leads two fantastic bands devoted to honoring and updating jazz history: the Cookers, an all-star team of ’60s and ’70s veterans, and Point Of Departure, a group of youngsters who explore the territory where hard bop and early fusion meet. The music seems to shimmer in the air, as Weiss and saxophonist Myron Walden essay the melodies in thoughtful unison and bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Kush Abadey pound the rhythms home.

Phil Freeman Stereogum

If you wanted to know what is truly happening right now in American jazz, you could do worse than follow the Point of Departure band around. Weiss is an astute trumpet player (as this album proves), but his true callings are talent scout, bandleader, ensemble conceptualist, and curator of jazz classics that need revisiting.

Thomas Conrad Stereophile

The standout is Weiss himself, who never sounded so confident or melodic. His most impressive work so far on record. And his haunting arrangements are outstanding. A superlative record and yet another feather in David Weiss’ creative cap.

Tony Hall Jazz Wise

Weiss sets a high bar for today’s generation of mainstream modernists. If Wake Up Call doesn’t posit a brand new future, it reiterates how far jazz has come, and moves confidently toward the next horizon.

Howard Mandel Down Beat

Wake Up Call gives us much hope that there remains much potential in this arena yet to be realized. He also leaves us with this takeaway: music in transition is the most enthralling music of all.

S. Victor Aaron Something Else

There’s always something engrossing about David Weiss & Point of Departure. The trumpeter’s quintet has for some time now burrowed deeply into infectious 1970s post-bop and fusion material, playing the not-too-common hits, and in every configuration of this band, there’s always a spectacular energy about them that makes each return something to get excited about.

Anthony Dean-Harris Nextbop

Trumpeter David Weiss never fails to give us amazing music, no matter what the setting… As with some of David’s other projects, the music is a look back at the future of modern jazz in the late 60s and early 70s – with a spotlight on amazing compositions by artists like Wayne Shorter, Kenny Cox, Joe Henderson, Tony Williams, Charles Moore, and John McLaughlin – music that was years ahead of its time when written, and which gets even more forward-thinking treatment here by the group.

Jazz Chill

“Wake Up Call” is a superb new chapter in the ongoing saga of David Weiss and Point of Departure. The two guitars, and lyrical solos from all three guitarists help add a sharper jazz-rock focus to the ensemble, and the expanded repertoire continues to shed light on an underrated period of jazz history. The explorations of the material refine the band’s approach to a very unique and specific language, subtly pushing at the boundaries of acoustic jazz and moving it forward. Though still early, “Wake Up Call” is a strong contender for year end best of lists. Rating: 9.5/10

David Weiss Quartet/Quintet in the Bay Area

I’ve put together a wonderful group of Bay Area musicians to do a couple of shows with me in the area. The highlight of this for me is that I will be performing with Danny Spencer, who was the drummer in one of my favorite and influential bands, Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet. I’m really looking forward to this opportunity. We will be performing at The Back Room in Berkeley and the Hotel Healdsburg in Healdsburg.

I am putting together a group of what I think are excellent musicians in the Los Angeles area to perform my Sextet music. We will do one show at Vitello’s on November 8.

David Weiss & Point of Departure CD Release Party for “Wake Up Call” March 30 at Nublu

Revive Music and Ropeadope Records are hosting a CD release party for Point of Departure’s new CD “Wake Up Call” at Nulbu on Thursday, March 30.

We will also be performing a CD release party upstate in Marlboro, NY at The Falcon this Sunday, April 2.

The new CD features material from the late ’60s and early ’70s, continuing our quest to further explore and redefine the music from that turbulent era. We recorded tunes by Tony Williams Lifetime, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Charles Moore, Kenny Cox, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson and the Brazilian avant-garde/fusion group Grupo Um.

The CD essentially features two incarnations of the band. There a few tracks with most of the original band, J.D. Allen- Tenor Sax, Nir Felder and Ben Eunson- Guitar, Matt Clohesy- Bass and Kush Abadey- Drums. The bulk of the CD is given over to the new revamped version of the group that features Myron Walden- Tenor Sax, Ben Eunson and Travis Reuter- Guitar, Matt Clohesy- Bass and Kush Abadey- Drums.

There has already been a lot of great press for the new CD. See below for some of the nicer things the critics have been saying about this new CD. You can click on the links if you would like to read the whole article.

The Cookers have just returned from a beautiful tour of Mexico. We played Guadalajara, Torreón, Mexico City and Cuernavaca. We also did a workshop in Mexico City with selected students that was very inspirational to us. The students were all so well prepared and had such a thirst and curiosity about the music that it was a pleasure to work with them. Jazz is truly reaching everyone these days. We are now gearing up to go to Brazil and then we will be back in New York for a return engagement at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola. We will also be heading to the Washington DC area for a gig at Bethesda Blues & Jazz and then we will be off to Australia in June. “Mr. Weiss, a resourceful trumpeter and arranger, devotes his Point of Departure band to the style and repertory of 1960s postbop, with contemporary urgency. The band functions at the higher levels of postbop slipperiness, staying away from too-obvious material and addresses this music with an air of feverish discovery, and only the most permissive sort of reverence. Mr. Felder leads the best of these digressions, and like his teammates he sounds thrillingly unrestricted. Whatever Mr. Weiss meant with the name of this band, he named it well.”

Nate Chinen, NY Times

“A red-hot live recording. This is a ferociously energetic album that will make you jump up and down as you listen to it.”

-Phil Freeman, Burning Ambulance

“The music is abstract, mysterious and aggressive. Pulsating swing jockeys with a multiplicity of broken rhythms. Dark, modal harmony, a hide-and-go-seek beat and overlapping meters blur the border between freedom and form.”

-Mark Stryker Detroit Free Press

“This is spirited music, emotionally engaged on a deep level. Glorious.”

Marcus O’Dair The Arts Desk

“Pulse-quickening live set. They feel as sharp and potent as the quickening breeze from an approaching storm.”

Forrest Dylan Bryant,  Jazz Times

The late 1960’s were a turbulent but exciting time for jazz. The music seemed to simultaneously get more complex and simpler at the same time as a variety of influences infused the music. Some were experimenting with soul, rock and exotic rhythms from the India and the Far East. Others were carrying on the innovations of the second great Miles Davis quintet, using the groups ever shifting rhythms and harmonic complexities as a springboard to new compositional ideas. Some somehow combined both to create some new, exciting music. The Point of Departure Quintet is re-examining
some of the most innovative music of the period, some of it neglected, some, perhaps, never quite as developed as it could have been as things seemed to move at a pace during that period that left some music from being fully realized as they quickly moved on to the next new thing. Among the composers being re-examined and re-imagined are Andrew Hill, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson and music from the unsung Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet (who recorded two seminal but under-appreciated records for Blue Note in the late 1960’s).In 2010, the New York-born Weiss, and his formidable ensemble –consisting of JD Allen on tenor saxophone, bassist Matt Clohesy, guitarist Nir Felder and drummer Jamire Williams – released Snuck In, the group’s critically acclaimed Sunnyside debut, recorded at the Jazz Standard. The follow-up CD, Snuck Out, consists of selections from the group’s second set from the same night, featuring the music of Charles Tolliver, Charles Moore, Wayne Shorter, and one selection composed by the leader.

“Point of Departure for the most part, performs continuous sets with each tune morphing into the next so each set is more of a complete statement than a collection of individual tunes,” Weiss says. “This is how we wanted to present this music on these two CDs, live, just as it naturally unfolded in the club that night.”

Weiss, a fearless improviser who is well-versed in the modern trumpet tradition – from Freddie Hubbard and Booker Little to Don Cherry and Woody Shaw – and co-founder of The New Composers Octet, aurally illustrates his approach to jazz ensemble improvisation by breathing new life into these sixties-era selections, thanks to Williams’ light-speed drumming, Clohesy’s sure-footed basslines, and Felder’s twangy and textured guitar lines. The opening number, “Revillot,” is one of Charles Tolliver’s oldest pieces, and was released on Jackie McLean’s album, It’s Time (dig Allen’s sly quote of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman.”). “Charles is one of the people who showed me the light and got me in the mind set that made this band possible, Weiss says. “Strive to be the best musician possible, always move forward and do it with passion and conviction. Go for the jugular and mean it.”

Snuck Out is a daring and dynamic recording that captures an exciting jazz ensemble at the height of their improvisational powers. “We are trying to blur the lines between the composition and the improvising,” Weiss says. “The improvising is more based on the tune, more of a theme and variation thing than a head, solo, head thing so one can continue on after the melody has been stated and people can think it is still part of the melody or vice versa.”
