Already a three-album charting hit maker, he scored his first US #1 movie track with the song, “Teaser” from John Carpenter’s Vampires film, a collaboration with producers The Robb Brothers.  For the smash follow-up soundtrack, Brad subsequently joined forces with John Carpenter and some of Los Angeles’ hottest musicians for the music to the movie, Ghosts of Mars, starring Ice Cube.

Other major accomplishments include his songs featured on television shows The Young & The Restless (CBS) and Passions (NBC). Brad has three best-selling albums: “Blues Thunder,” “Power Blues Guitar Live” and “Hands On The Wheel” that included worldwide charting hits “Step By Step,” “Change It Up” and “The Ballad Of John Lee.”

“You spend so much time messing around on the guitar, inevitably it leads you to something fun and new,” says Wilson. “It’s not going to replace just plugging a guitar into an amp but it gives you another color to paint with. It’s the future of the guitar. I am going to try and make traditional roots music with this technology. It’s something that will introduce kids in their teens and 20s to guitar in a different light!”

Interview With Brad Wilson
By Richard FreedmanSome probably don’t consider Visalia the hub of show business. Actually, probably nobody does.Yet, for bluesman Brad Wilson, it’s ideal — 230 miles southeast of San Francisco and 190 miles north of Los Angeles. Wilson spent plenty of time in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Living a half hour from Sequoia National Park seems to just work. “I do so much traveling, it’s just right in the center of the state,” Wilson said. After a few years of touring nationally, Wilson’s content going up and down the West Coast, toting his Rollin’ Blues Thunder to CreekWalk in Vacaville this Friday night. “It’s better to focus on the region” than hit the road across the globe, Wilson believes. “You can build long-term relationships with talent buyers in terms of building up an audience. And California is gigantic, so putting all our resources in California allowed us to work year after year.”Having his tunes featured on John Carpenter’s films “Vampires” and “Ghosts of Mars,” plus TV’s “The Young & The Restless” and the NBC soap, “Passions,” surely helped pay the bills.His time in Los Angeles paved the way for those projects, he said. “It’s clearly who you know,” Wilson said. “I was lucky enough to knock on doors and meet people. You have to put yourself in an environment where these people are walking around.”Wilson heeded the advice of “learn as much as you can” about publishing rights, “the most important aspect of being a songwriter.” It undoubtedly helped as he penned “Step by Step,” charted at No. 1 three weeks in a row on Europe’s Hit Tracks Top 100 and No. 8 on America’s Roots Music Report. Two of Wilson’s songs — “Cool Running” and “Let’s Go Barefootin’ It” — were played often on SiriusXM Radio.One of Wilson’s European hits, “The Ballad of John Lee,” is a tribute to the late John Lee Hooker, who lived several years in Vallejo.Though never meeting the legend, “I had read about John Lee Hooker’s life and put it in a song,” Wilson said. “I wanted to do something contemporary and wanted to focus on John Lee Hooker and his life. It’s kind of a modern snapshot of him. Clearly, I don’t know if he would have liked it. I do know it’s fun.”Despite a consistent schedule of around 100 gigs a year, Wilson said he’s wise enough to enjoy the home life of his wife — “priority No. 1” — and several cats, including one 16-year-old feline. “It’s about being able to slow down enough to write good, quality songs,” he said. “Get in a space where you can focus on the lyrics and the music.” By limiting his travel to the West Coast, it leaves more time to write and record, Wilson said.“I don’t feel rushed to make the records,” he said. Fortunately, Wilson said, he’s at the point of enjoying theaters, bidding farewell to the bar scene. Plus, he’s doing the outdoor festivals like CreekWalk “where people want to have a nice time and a happy event that’s over at 9, 10 o’clock. I just think it’s positive that cities want to provide people who live there a nice musical experience.”As for his seemingly pedestrian name — “there are a lot of great musicians out there named Brad Wilson” — the guitarist was always happy with what he was born with. “I never envisioned myself ‘a star’ that would need a name that would be marketable,” he said, laughing that “it would be fun having a whole band of Brad Wilsons.” “Honestly, for me, just playing guitar and singing my songs and is enough,” he said.Besides, he saw what the lure of fame and fortune did to many during his Hollywood tenure. “I never saw it as a positive because of the damage it does to people,” Wilson said. “Friends I knew in the ’80s, they’re done.” Along the way, there was, of course, the good advice — and the bad.“I guess the worst advice is always, ‘Play cover songs and not write your own songs and try to imitate someone.’ That’s poor advice,” Wilson said. The best advice, he continued, was from guitar icon Jeff Beck. “He said, ‘If you’re not practicing two hours a day, you’re only hurting yourself.’ There are a few days I don’t pay at all and days I play all day,” Wilson said. “I think you have to find the inspiration.”
