When soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom plays Kurt Weill‘s « My Ship » on her new albumSixteen Sunsets, a pale glow around her notes comes from a simple special effect: pointing her horn under the hood of a piano whose strings are free to resonate. Bloom has always been preoccupied with sound, and has one of the prettiest, clearest tones around on soprano. She never sounds better than in ballads, and on Sixteen Sunsets she plays more than a dozen, including a few associated with Billie Holiday. You can tell Bloom knows the words to « Good Morning Heartache, » even when her phrases depart from the lyric.

Billie Holiday is a good role model for how to vary and honor a melody at once; how to put in heart and bring out the blues. Jane Ira Bloom can tap into the soprano’s piercing quality, but her default tone is round and overtone-rich. It’s almost as pure as a classical saxophonist’s, but Bloom the jazz musician may custom-tailor each note, inflecting it with a distinct vibrato or shading the pitch. She may let a note linger or clip it short, play it clean or coarse, or ascend to her steely high register.

Bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Matt Wilson keep those slow tempos moving onSixteen Sunsets. The younger Brooklyn pianist Dominic Fallacaro has the sweet and sweeping stuff down, but I wish he always caught the bluesy undercurrents in the standard ballads, the way he does in Billie Holiday tunes like « Left Alone. »

One reason Bloom’s ballads are usually so effective is the contrast with her fast numbers. OnSixteen Sunsets, only a couple of songs outrun or even approach a medium tempo. One of those is her oldie « Ice Dancing, » a bright tune with a tango tinge and an ending that’s catchy like a mousetrap snapping shut.

In the long run, this program of non-stop beautiful ballads starts to seem like too much of a good thing. Yeah, that’s right — we’re complaining about an overabundance of riches.

Tim Porter on mandolin, accompanied by virtuoso guitarist Joe Selly, and internationally acclaimed bassist Santi Debriano return to the NJMH to perform and continue the musical dialogue highlighting the long history and continuing influence of mandolin in Blues, Jazz, and Latin music. By the early twentieth century, the mandolin was well established in the south as an instrument in New Orleans jazz, in rural settings, and in university string ensembles. With the « Great Migration » from the south to the north and west the instrument and its southern-acquired repertoire moved into the urban centers of the north and the far west. Join us as we look at the historical and musical underpinnings of this phenomenon which continues to influence American music.

Ask a painter to « explain » a painting to you, and within minutes, hands will be flying, as they describe the angles and the rhythms of the images. This evening, we will investigate the influence that jazz had on such masters as Stuart Davis, Piet Mondrian and Romare Bearden. Our guide will be Professor Robert G. O’Meally, Columbia University’s Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English and Comparative Literature, and founder and director of the Center for Jazz Studies. His new project is a full study of Bearden’s uses of literary subjects, and this evening Professor O’Meally will share his passion for jazz and fine art in an original, provocative and eminently entertaining way.

GARY LUCAS’ new duo collaboration with legendary Van Der Graaf Generator frontman PETER HAMMILL entitled « OTHERWORLD »
is released on Monday Feb. 3rd by Esoteric Recordings/Antenna, distributed by Cherry Red Records.
The pair recorded the album in Peter Hammill’s Terra Incognita Studio in Bath England last year,
and features Lucas’ psychedelic fretwork in tandem with Hammill’s distinctive vocals,
in a program mixing the duo’s songwriting with other-worldly soundscapes.

The duo makes their live debut on Fri. Feb. 21st at London’s Union Chapel.
Their next appearance is scheduled at the Gouveia Art-Rock Festival in Portugal April 27th.
