“Fredette’s delivery is refreshingly direct and expressive throughout; her warm alto conveys the wit and calm of the fully-formed grown-up who knows whereof she sings.  The music on ‘No Sad Songs for Me’ will delight anyone who appreciates vocal jazz at its highest level and in its most
  conducive setting.”
–Dr. Judith Schlesinger, All About Jazz.com
No Sad Songs for Me is the apotheosis of the hard-swinging, hip phrasing, and novel repertoire that has made Fredette a favourite vocalist of the cult purists in the Big Apple.”
–Nick Catalano, www.artsandopinion.com
“Vocal jazz at the highest level of execution requires a combination of musicality, timing,
phrasing, creativity and intelligence.  Carol Fredette has an abundance of these ingredients, and  all they all shine through on ‘No Sad Songs for Me.'”
-Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz
“…she exudes style and substance.”
–Christopher Loudon, Jazz Times
“Carol Fredette’s newest collection of songs is vintage jazz already…I have never heard her sing so radiantly or swing so seamlessly!  She  is one of the treasures of the music scene, she comes in a multitude of flavors, and I love them all.  Like ice cream, I crave Carol Fredette!”  –Rex Reed

Denise Perrier takes you on a musical exploration of Dinah Washington’s music, beautifully gowned, wearing Ms. Washington’s signature tiara and furs. There are moments when you feel you are in the presence of Dinah.
She’ll be singing songs identified with the legendary songstress, including “What a Difference a Day Made,” “Unforgettable,” “I Wanna’ Be Loved” and “Lover, Come Back to Me.”
“Ms. Perrier boasts a gorgeous instrument; call it a burnished contralto.  When she sustains a tone, it remains unswerving. Yet when she decides to go for a high note, she can leap an octave with ease and vocal strength.”  ~ Harvey Siders, Jazz Times

Denise Perrier has spent most of her thirty-year career performing in the San Francisco Bay  Area and touring    Europe,  Latin America and Asia. With her latest CD,”Denise Perrier and the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra,” she has moved to  a higher level of artistry and popularity.  Harkening back to the time when a singer told the story and left the rest to the instrumentalists, Denise has a very  welcoming straight-ahead style, concentrating on the standards and adding blues and Latin for variety. Her  musical configuration, Denise connects with audiences – that’s her forte.

She is known as  “the voice with a  heart.”
Blessed with a rich contralto voice and the ability to sing ballads and blues with equal artistry, Denise has performed in the theatrical revue “In the House of the Blues,”  portraying Bessie Smith; and the vaudeville “One Mo’  Time.”   She was featured in the Grammy-nominated CD, “Color Me Blue,” with Brother Jack McDuff and, in addition to the latest one,  has produced four CDs: “The Second Time Around” (2008),  “I Wanna Be Loved” (1997), also with Houston Person, and  “East Meets  West” (2001) which includes sides performed in Russia.  In 2004, she came out with “Live at Yoshi’s; Blue Monday Party,” which received much critical acclaim and reached high on the jazz charts.
Denise was born in Louisiana but moved to the East Bay Area with her family at the age of five.  Denise didn’t sing extensively in church, but her family had a jukebox, and she heard records by Billie Holiday and the other great early jazz singers.  Denise started singing in public when she was in a Haitian and Afro-Cuban dance group, obtaining her first professional engagement with a vocal ensemble called the Intervals.  Louis Armstrong saw the group and put them in his entourage for a performance in Las Vegas.  Shortly afterwards, Denise was recruited for a three-month gig in Australia, which turned into an extended stay in the Far East.
She performed in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan,    Formosa, Japan, Guam, and other Asian cities, staying for    almost five years with Hong Kong as her home base. She also spent a year and a half in Vietnam during the war touring military bases.
Denise returned to the United States, lived in New York for five years, and then settled in San Francisco, where she became one of its most popular performers. She performs extensively in the San Francisco Bay Area’s most prestigious venues as well as touring Latin America and Europe.

SUPPORTS OTONOWA’S
JULY 14, 2014
TOUR TO TOHOKU !
Dear friend and supporter of musicFor most of us, the March 2011 devastating tsunami and earthquake with loss of 19,000 lives and more than 300,000 displaced in Northern Japan is a distant memory. Yet, for those in the Tohoku region where the quake had its greatest impact, many lives are still on hold as communities are being rebuilt.Takahiro Dai is a high school trumpet-playing student who lost contact with his family for two days after the earthquake and still has not been able to return to his home in Otsuchi.  Last March, on the second anniversary of the quake, Takahiro, along with his family, were treated to an uplifting Otonowajazz concert, and he was able to participate in jazz clinics with his fellow students.
Otonowa, a fiscally-sponsored project of the San Jose Jazz Festival, is a jazz quartet (of Japanese U.S. and Japanese-born musicians) led by renown drummer Akira Tana, with Masaru Koga on reeds, percussion and traditional Japanese instruments, Art Hirahara on piano and Noriyuki Ken Okada on bass, with guest vocalist Saki Kono. The group came together after the earthquake to raise funds for earthquake victims. One of their concerts was live streamed, so those in Japan could participate and understand the extent of support they had from Americans.  Out of this effort grew Otonowa (Sound Circle), a recording project of jazz interpretations of traditional Japanese folk songs. On the third anniversary of the earthquake, Otonowa toured the Tohoku region and gave community concerts and clinics to high school students like Takaki. Most of the participants families were still living in temporary housing with their futures uncertain. Many of those listening were brought to tears upon hearing the folk songs, which provided an emotional connection to their homes and villages, and were thrilled to receive a copy of the CD.As a result of the continuing interest in having Otonowa return, Otonowa is planning a return tour in July 2014 to the ravaged Tohoku region to play a week’s worth of concerts and clinics.

As before, the musicians will donate their time for the Tohoku concerts and clinics. Otonowa is currently fundraising to cover their costs. So far over $5000 of the $20,000 budget has been raised. We hope you might be able to contribute any amount to get us closer to our goal.

Tax deductible contributions can be made to San Jose Jazz, sanjosejazz.org online (http://www.sanjosejazz.vbotickets.com/donations/1298) with “Otonowa” indicated on the Comments line.  Contributions can also be sent to:

Celebrated NYC Jazz Guitarist Launches Second Studio Album on Kickstarter
New York–Jazz musician and composer Matt Panayides announces the launch of his group’s second album which is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.“I’m excited about this release because the band has had an opportunity to perform this music live and is excited to channel that energy into a recording,” said Matt Panayides, guitarist and group lead. “We’ve put in countless hours to make this album a joy to listen to both for our listeners and our fans”.Joining Matt on his album are three jazz giants and veterans of the New York music scene. The album features saxophonist Rich Perry, a long time collaborator and band member,  bass player Thompson Kneeland and drummer Mark Ferber. As Matt’s second career release,  the album promises a refreshingly modern take on traditional harmonic structures, giving each song its own unique feel and vocabulary. The result will be a mix of honest tracks paired with a compellingly beautiful voice of the instruments. As an artist Matt hopes to create music that the listener can relate to emotionally while challenging a listener’s view of the natural world around them

. “I believe each composition is it’s own unique universe, much like the multi-verse within which we live” said Panayides.Matt’s Kickstarter campaign has 11 days left with a funding goal of $5,000. Reward options range from $1 to $500, with $10 and up receiving the early release album in October. All funds raised will be used directly for the album production, publicity and release.About Matt Panayides
Matt Panayides is a creative jazz guitarist who has led his own musical groups in New York for over a decade, performing in hot spots such as Smalls, Cornelia Street Cafe, 55 Bar and Birdland. During his career Matt has performed with great musical talents including Jane Monheit, Dan Weiss, Clarence Penn, Mark Ferber, Rich Perry and Steve LaSpina. In 2011 Matt released his first album titled “Tapestries of Song” featuring his personal compositions.                           HOT HOT JAZZ !
THE BEST JAZZ SHOW IN TOWN”, ………..
Imagine a stage filled with contemporary  Django Reinhardt descendants and you’ll get a sense that the collective talent pool on the bandstand is larger than the Arc deTiomphe!”
    The Wall Street Journal
The Festival, started in 2000, found there was huge interest in Django’s style of HOT JAZZ.  It has gone on to be a highly anticipated event twice a year, now in its 15th year,  accompanied by major tours – see all info below. .  The AllStar bands emerged out of the Festival which is Produced by Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta.
The Django Festival AllStars carry on the legacy of the brilliant gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt who was part of one of the most famous musical partnerships in European history with virtuoso jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, together they formed the Hot Club Quintette of France.
The Allstars, from France,  bring the audience to their feet with lightning-fast guitar fingerwork on standards such as “Minor Swing” and  also put the crowd in a romantic mood with gorgeous melodies, hit songs of the past such as Django’s “Nuages”. The program includes many new original compositions that take the music beyond.
Django’s inspiration was Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington–sheer virtuosity with exuberant showmanship leaving a crowd breathless as it is with The Django Festival Allstars.  Leonardo DiCaprio has become one of the biggest fans as is George Benson, Woody Allen…every great jazz guitarist was inspired by Django, Keith Richards B.B.King, to name a few.
This summer, August 5-10 The Allstars will be headed  by Samson Schmitt, out on his own, a star in his own right .  For years, he grew up on the Birdland stage, playing side by side with his legendary father gypsy king Dorado Schmitt
Also featured at will be  virtuoso violinist Pierre Blanchard “who captures the true romantic fire of Grappelli” and Ludovic Beier on Accordion and Accordina who “was breathtaking and beautiful”, says Will Friedwald of the Wall Street Journal.  On rhythm guitar this summer is DouDou Cuillerier who also brings the audience to its feet with his scat singing.  Brian Torff holds it all together on bass.   Each night there is a top US jazz great:  Aug. 5:  Joel Frahm,  6 & 7:  Anat Cohen, 8: Jane Monheit   9:  Edmar Castaneda – Jazz Harp, and 10: Chris Washburne

Dorado Schmitt will be back in November with all ‘3’ sonsAmati, Samson, and Bronson.  Pierre Blanchard and Ludovic Beier return with Francko Mehrstein on Rhythm Guitar and Xavier Nikq on Bass. Guests TBA
“Expect Bouyont rhythm, blinding technique, solid entertainment” says Nate Chinen of the NY Times.  DJANGO held it all together like a magnet, as does his descendants, The Django Festival AllStars!
Come to Birdland and celebrate.  The Django Reinhardt NY Festival is about ‘joy’!  We can always use a dose of that!
Summer tour:
July 24,25: Aspen Colorado Jazz Festival”
July 26: Musical Instrument Museum, Phoenix
             29: Katherine Hepburn

Local Legend Sam Waymon – Piano and Vocals
with Members of the Sam Waymon Band Plus Special Guests
Born in North Carolina, Sam Waymon began his musical odyssey playing along with his sister, Eunice. His sister left North Carolina in the ’50s and traveled north to pursue her career. Along the way she dropped her given name and became one of music’s most influential and independent musicians, known as Nina Simone. Sam performed with and wrote music for his sister for over ten years but finally broke away to develop a style of his own that combines gospel, R&B, blues and jazz. Sam went on to record for record labels like: RCA, Polygram, and his own label Resolution records. He has worked side by side with legendary artists such as Miles Davis, Donnie Hathaway, Roberta Flack, Phyllis Hyman, The 5th dimension, Main Ingredient, and the list goes on and on.
