The Jazz Journalists Association Launches

Grassroots JazzApril Initiative

“Jazz Heroes” To Be Honored in 21 Cities

MARCH 17, NEW YORK CITY — The Jazz Journalists Association today announced the start of its third annual JazzApril campaign, concurrent with the Smithsonian’s Jazz Appreciation Month culminating in UNESCO’s International Jazz Day (April 30). JazzApril supports JAM and Jazz Day by working with grassroots jazz activists to celebrate their local jazz scenes through imaginative use of media and strengthened collaborative networking.

In at least 20 U.S. cities and Toronto, Canada, jazz community activists  will honor local “Jazz Heroes,” people of extraordinary devotion and service described by the JJA as “activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz.” The JJA will announce the names of all 2014 Jazz Heroes and details of each city’s presentation parties on its JazzApril website on April 1.

.

The cities are Baltimore, the Bay Area (Oakland), Bloomington, Boston, Chicago, Columbia MO, Detroit, Durham NC, Hartford CT area, New Orleans, New York, Newark, Pittsburgh, Portland OR, Santa Cruz, Seattle, Schenectady, Tallahassee, Toronto, Washington DC, and Woodstock NY. More may be added before April 1. Organizations and institutions including A Place for Jazz, The Art of Cool, Elastic Arts, JazzBoston, Jazz from Bloomington, Jazzstock, Kuumba Jazz Workshop, the Litchfield Jazz Festival, Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, PDX Jazz Portland Jazz Festival, and Yoshi’s are participating in JazzApril and the Jazz Heroes program.

Past year’s Heroes have been jazz club owners, health care providers, philanthropists, record company executives, arts administrators and musicians whose personal influences have gone beyond the sounds of their performances to improve quality of life even for people out of earshot. Jazz Heroes receive engraved statuettes from the JJA, presented at free public parties. In many locales, Jazz Heroes have been covered by local media and mentioned in mayoral proclamations endorsing local jazz.

The JJA’s JazzApril campaign, conducted annually since 2012, has provided concepts, contacts, suggestions and support for publicizing the creative vitality and economic viability of America’s indigenous “classic” yet contemporary music. Jazz fans, businesses, arts organizations, musicians, journalists, presenters, educators and government officials are invited to participate using any of the wide variety of low or no-cost ideas posted at JazzApril.com, Usable graphics for Jazz April, JAM and IJD can be downloaded from there, too.

Sponsors of JazzApril 2014 include the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, North Coast Brewing, Century Media Partners LLC, JazzBoston and the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The Jazz Education Network and JazzWeek have signed on as 2014 Media Partners. Support is still sought and welcomed.

The Jazz Journalists Association is  a 501 (c ) (3) nonprofit organization of writers, photographers, broadcasters, videographers, new media producers and their affiliates professionally involved with jazz.

THE BREATH COURSES THROUGH US:
A NEW DOCUMENTARY FILM
ABOUT THE NEW YORK ART QUARTET
DIRECTED BY ALAN ROTH

The Breath Courses Through Us (2013) is a new documentary film about the early 1960s avant-garde jazz group, the New York Art Quartet.Directed by Alan Roth, the film focuses on the group’s 35-year reunion, while reaching back through their recollections of their foundations and innovative musical ideas. The year 2014 is the 50th anniversary of this group, and a revolutionary period in jazz music, which declared its existence in the October Revolution in Jazz, in October 1964.

The New York City premiere will take place on Sunday, May 18, 7:30 P.M. at Anthology Film Archives, 32 Second Ave. Preceding the premiere will be Michael Snow’s rarely screened 1964 film New York Eye and Ear Control, with the music and images of Albert Ayler, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Don Cherry, Sunny Murray, Gary Peacock. This NYC premiere takes place almost 50 years to the month when the group was officially formed after Tchicai and Rudd met Milford Graves in Michael Snow’s loft.
The U.S. premiere took place on January 31, 2014 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. with filmmaker Alan Roth and bassist Reggie Workman in attendance (see photo). The world premiere took place at the FIDMarseille-Festival International de Cinéma (http://www.fidmarseille.org) in Marseille, France, in July 2013.

The Breath Courses Through Us mirrors the newly open improvisationary style “free jazz” that subverted the traditional structure of jazz. Unfolding in free time and enveloped in their music, the film helps the viewer better understand the human element of the creative process, by focusing on their interactions in the present.

The New York Art Quartet was a pioneering jazz group in the early 1960s. Consisting of John Tchicai (saxophone), Roswell Rudd (trombone) and Milford Graves (percussion), the group formed in 1964 and lasted only until the end of 1965. This core of three worked with many bass players, including Reggie Workman. Poet Amiri Baraka often read his poetry at their gigs, and read his famous poem, Black Dada Nihilismus, on the group’s first album. Both Workman and Baraka joined the New York Art Quartet for the group’s reunion and are featured in this film as well.

The Breath Courses Through Us brings the viewer directly into the artists’ lives, their exchanges, and discussions with each other during the reunion dinner and on tour. The members of the New York Art Quartet—along with other musicians and a jazz historian—recount their individual history, early group development, and their new musical ideas. Saxophonist Steve Lacy, guitarist Pierre Dørge from Denmark, and jazz historian Ben Young are also featured in the film.

Director Alan Roth explains, “the story of the New York Art Quartet is not only found in the historical details, but in the interplay between artists, the joy they feel in being with each other and performing, and the transcendent nature of their live performances.”

Jazz journalist Francis Davis wrote in the New York Times “Collective improvisation was a cherished ideal in early free jazz, but …this was often just talk. For the New York Art Quartet, collective improvisation was a raison d’etre, the band’s musical starting point.”

The Breath Courses Through Us is the second of Roth’s examination of free jazz. His first film, Inside Out In The Open (2001), is one of the few documentary films on free jazz. It features interviews with 11 free jazz musicians along with live performances and continues to be screened worldwide.

[A deeper examination of the New York Art Quartet is complemented by a 2013 project (not affiliated with this documentary film) by Triplepoint Records(www.triplepointrecords.com. The New York Art Quartet: call it art, contains the uncirculated recordings of the New York Art Quartet (1964-65) in a collectors set  of 5-LPs and a detailed book]

Alan Roth is based in Brooklyn, New York. His filmmaking career began in mid-life, after a career in the U.S. Postal Service in Cleveland, Ohio. Besides these two feature documentary films, he is the video director for Women’s Power Against HIV/AIDS: Love, Sex, & Choices, an innovative on-line project that uses soap opera stories to educate urban Black women about HIV prevention.
Roth also creates shorter video works, with an emphasis on culture and geographic place.

Bertolt Brecht famously said that “art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it.” With this in mind, the NYJAZZ Quartet takes on a number of pieces heard on Blue Divide that offer a musical discussion or debate on numerous issues from past and present. The improvisations that compliment these tunes tell a story by exploring issues in a way that can only be accomplished by members of an ensemble who have performed together for over two decades. Our first priority is creating and sharing some good music. If our treatment of this music inspires listeners to begin their own debate, then we will successfully hold true to Brecht’s vision for shaping reality, and our own vision for future audiences to experience this music as an evolving art form inspired by the present day while still keeping the traditions of this music alive.

Recorded the day after returning to New York City from a West Coast tour, we began the recording session by simply conversing. The short open improvisation that begins the recording, and is aptly named Prelude, is a visceral example of what this music is about – four friends gathering together, exchanging initial ideas with each other and the listener, and tuning themselves up both literally and figuratively for the musical discussion soon to follow. This improvisational section segues into our bassist Carlo De Rosa’s Pasillo Azul, Spanish for “blue hallway”. It was inspired by a piece taught to Carlo by guitarist Jim Hall. It captures the essence of a blues but also offers an unsettled feeling through the use of altered chord changes.

Davey’s Dreams is a piece I wrote for Davey Schildkraut, a saxophonist most known for his recorded work with Miles Davis on the tune Solar, and as the lead alto player with Stan Kenton. There are many artists who never reach a position of mass acceptance or popularity for any number of reasons. Despite his time spent with Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich, and Tito Puente, Davey is one of those artists whose story never really made it into the history books. However, his long lasting influence on the first generation of Bebop musicians and those to follow is beyond measure. I spent countless afternoons with Davey over years of study and friendship that lasted well into the evenings, and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been able to get inside the music and the mind of this unsung hero and genius of Jazz.

Dispossession is a piece I wrote based on travels to the Middle East where I experienced both sides of a conflict that has either simmered or raged for decades. The term dispossession means the act of depriving an indigenous population of their land either by removal or occupation. The conflicts that emerge from these actions can be felt by the unsettling use of varied time signatures used in the beginning of the piece and by the constant trading of ideas between the soprano saxophone and piano during improvised sections.

Knowing is another piece written by bassist Carlo De Rosa and it offers us a chance to explore a more introspective space. It was composed to reflect the first time something is deeply known to a person. This can be translated or applied to many circumstances depending on each individual listener. Yet wherever this is felt, it is a universally held truth that is beyond a mere feeling or fleeting thought, and it tells us just as much about ourselves as how it relates to those around us.

G’s Waltz was written for my daughter Gabriella and included on this CD as a stark reminder of why we need to examine the issues of the day explored on some of the other pieces on this recording. These issues will have countless repercussions on our future generation, and it is important to recognize that our children will have to face the consequences of our actions. I wrote this piece as a playful waltz that simply reflects a childlike simplicity and curiosity to the world around us.

The 1986 film Round Midnight that included Herbie Hancock’s Still Time marked a significant time in my life as a student of Jazz. It was also released in the same year that I first met fellow NYJAZZ Quartet member Eric McPherson. Before the days of YouTube, we either saw our heroes live on stage or on film. Round Midnight provided the definition of how music could be used to tell a story, especially as the wonderful musical performances shared the starring role with the complex challenges experienced by the people who created it. Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and all the other artists in Round Midnight made a tremendous impact on many young artists of my generation and on future audience members to follow.

Taksim reflects how a park protest in Istanbul quickly grew into a nationwide movement speaking out against government policy. I was in Turkey in 2013 during these protests and had firsthand experience of what defined this movement and how it was misrepresented in local and international media. Out of the many countries I have visited, I have rarely felt so welcomed and connected to a culture as I felt in Turkey, whether among their artistic world or while speaking with the wide cross-section of people I met on Taksim Square and in Gezi Park. Interestingly, the Turkish word Taksim means division, and it can also refer to the Arabic word Taqsim, which means melodic improvisation before a musical composition. The concept that I explore in this piece reflects the universal divide occurring in many parts of the world. This includes the divide between the priorities of the people and their ruling party; the divide between knowledge and ignorance brought on by financial or ideological interests; and how these interests permeate the divide that many are currently experiencing in the economy, in politics, in education policy, and in the arts.
