Important step closer to ending the bear bile industry

July/juillet 2015

Important step closer to ending the bear bile industry / Un important pas de franchi vers la fin de l’industrie de la bile d’ours

Because of your support we are closer than ever to putting an end to the cruel bear bile industry in South Korea. With our partners, Green Korea United, we have sterilized over 90% of the captive bear population — with a goal of 98% by this time next year.

This is a landmark step that will stop more bears from being born into a lifetime of suffering.

We aim to make bear bile farming illegal and with your help, we won’t stop until we end this cruel practice for good.

As our way to say thank you from the bears you protect all over the world, check out this adorable photo gallery!

Dear Bellanger,How far would you go to end the exploitation of tigers and other animals around the world? Today you can do just that with the click of a button.A generous donor has agreed to match your gifts up to $25,000 and we’re so close. This offer has been extended for another 12 hours!Every amount, no matter how small will bring us closer to our goal.

Will you give $5 or $10 and double your impact?

Right now tigers are being exploited in the name of tourism. Chained. Drugged. Forced to pose with tourists. This is no life for a majestic wild animal. This is no life for any animal. It has to stop.

Just imagine what we could do with $50,000!

Less than 24 hours to go

Dear Bellanger,

We urgently need your help to protect animals around the world from the immense cruelty and suffering they experience day after day.

As we told you, a generous donor has agreed to match your gifts up to $25,000 and we’re almost there! Just imagine – $50,000 could feed 45 orangutans for a year at the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation’s Badak Kecil island, funded in part by World Animal Protection…or could fund our investigations team to uncover the cruelty of animals in tourism entertainment…like the tigers we told you about yesterday.

Will you double your impact and help protect even more animals?

Act now! There’s only 24 more hours to go before this generous offer expires.

Photo of a tiger cubA tiger cub kept on a chain is used as a prop for photographs with tourists at an attraction in Bangkok, Thailand.

Dear Bellanger,We have some incredible news to share… in honour of World Tiger Day a generous donor has agreed to match your gifts up to $25,000!As one of our dedicated supporters, I know that you agree that wild animals belong in the wild. But sadly, with an estimated 3,000 tigers remaining in the wild the opportunity to see them in their own environment becomes more and more challenging. And the desire to get up close and even touch one is strong. Unbelievably, unknowing tourists will pay to have their picture taken with an adult tiger or to feed a baby tiger, thinking that no harm has come to that animal. But this is no life for these regal creatures. Chained to a platform, unable to roam. Living in a barren concrete pit. Torn from their mother and dressed in costumes. These beautiful, majestic animals suffer immensely. They don’t deserve this. But there is hope.$20 donation becomes $40 and a $50 donation becomes $100!But hurry this offer will expire at 8AM on Friday…Help us reach our goal and protect animals around the world from cruelty and suffering.

I hope that you have received my email describing the suffering of sow 78113. Kept in a metal cage, she is unable to turn around or lie down comfortably. Her legs are weak and she’s always hungry.

But there’s hope. You can be part of the solution to transform the lives of sows like 78113 by moving them into high welfare group housing or free-range farming systems.

Will you free 78113 and sows like her from a life behind bars?

…for months on end I stand still, in a metal cage not much bigger than I am. I can’t turn around ever and every time I try to lie down on the concrete floor my weak legs get caught and twisted between the bars. I’m fed just enough to keep me productive and alive but I’m always hungry. I smell my waste all day making it hard to breathe. I stand still, and it feels like forever…

This has to stop. There is another way. Will you help end the suffering of sows like 78113? Please donate now.

High welfare group housing or ultimately free-range farming is the solution. Sows in high welfare group housing have freedom of movement, sleep on straw beds, can forage, socialize and eat and drink freely. In free-range systems, these intelligent animals are able to exercise, socialize, forage, explore, wallow, feel the sunshine and breathe fresh air.

This is the better life for sows. Your donation could help World Animal Protection transform the lives of animals in some of the biggest pork producing countries in the world. Our ground breaking work with food companies will dramatically improve the lives of animals, promote higher welfare farming alternatives and rally positive change for farmed animals globally.

Your donation is making a difference for farm animals here in Canada and around the globe.

Dear Bellanger,

By now you received my email about the danger that lurks in our oceans. Like you, I was outraged that seals, dolphins, whales and other animals are suffering cruel deaths caused by “ghost” fishing gear.

In my last email, you read how long it can take for a whale trapped in ghost fishing gear to die. Can you imagine how scared and desperate they must feel, unable to free themselves of the pain?

Bellanger, I know that you feel as I do that marine animals – like all the animals we care about – have a right to live without suffering. If you’ve already given a gift, thank you for your support. If not, please make a donation now.

Together, we can give whales and other animals a life free from suffering.

Your gift of $25, $50, $100 or more can help us reduce and prevent ghost gear from ending up in our oceans in the first place, remove and recover ghost gear from our oceans, and rescueanimals caught in ghost gear, allowing them to return to the wild.

Don’t let another minute go by without taking action to save the lives of these defenceless animals – please give as generously as you can.

Fishing net wraps around coral off the coast of Jordan.Fishing net wraps around coral off the coast of Jordan. Malik Naumann / Marine Photobank

Dear Bellanger,

Do you know how long it takes for a whale trapped in “ghost” fishing gear to die?

Ghost fishing gear is lines, nets and traps that are lost, abandoned or discarded in our oceans  — a shocking 640,000 tons per year.

When a whale gets caught in this deserted equipment, death can be intense and short, like in cases of drowning. But, it can also take months, even years for this majestic animal to die from painful wounds, infections or starvation.

World Animal Protection is the only organization tackling the crisis of ghost fishing gear on a global scale. Will you make a gift and join our Sea Change campaign today?

Around the world and in Canada, thousands of whales are at risk because of ghost gear, as are countless other animals including dolphins, seals, sea lions, turtles, birds and many species of fish.

You can help vulnerable marine life when you donate now. They urgently need a voice  — your voice  — so they can live free from harm and suffering.

Our goal is to save one million of the world’s ocean creatures from ghost fishing gear by 2018. Let’s work together to reduce and recover this deadly equipment, and rescue animals caught in it.

Please give generously and protect precious marine life threatened by ghost gear.

Lynn Sincerely,
Lynn Kavanagh

The second earthquake to hit Nepal in just 2 weeks was a devastating reminder that our work to save animals is never done when it comes to disasters.

Now more than ever, animals and the people who depend on them are looking to the rest of the world for help. They simply cannot recover alone. Our team has returned to Nepal to survey the damage and provide care and treatment to animals in need.

We are counting on your continued support to replenish our disaster relief fund. We don’t know when the next disaster will strike, but we know that because of you, we’ll be ready to help animals.

Animals in Disasters – May 2015

Are there more disasters affecting animals than ever?

You’re right. The intensity and severity of the natural disasters we’ve seen already this year feels more frequent than ever before. Earthquakes, volcanoes, storms and floods have put millions of animals at risk. Thanks to your support, we can be there to help them. Will you help them again?Share your voice and make sure animals are protected. Together we can convince the Canadian government to help animals by directing more funding to protecting them during disasters. Download, print, sign and share the petition now!Earlier this month in Nepal, we saw a harsh reminder of the devastation disasters can cause to those most vulnerable. Earthquakes, storms and floods knock down more than just buildings. They wipe out crops, destroy homes and endanger the lives of people and animals alike.

By signing and sharing this petition we can help save the lives of animals and many of the world’s poorest people who depend on them for their livelihoods.

Devastation in Nepal:
We are on the ground helping animals in need

Dear Bellanger,
The stories coming from Nepal are devastating. Our Disaster Response Team is working day and night to save the lives of animals who are suffering, hungry and without homes. The animals in Kathmandu are desperate but in the Kavre District – the worst affected area of Nepal the animal suffering is overwhelming.

Akash Maheshwari our Disaster Veterinary Officer reported just yesterday that dogs are sleeping in ruins of their former homes. Livestock are without shelter and many need emergency treatment. The team, along with the Nepali vets who have generously volunteered their time are overwhelmed by the need. We can’t protect animals alone.

Without your support our veterinarians can’t continue to save the lives of animals caught in disasters. Please give generously to our Disaster Relief Fund.

Your donation will mean the world to an animal in need.

Act now! Dogs are being gassed – Can’t view this email? Click here to view it in your browser..

Dear Bellanger,

It’s difficult for me to write this email. When I heard about what’s happening in so called “dog shelters” around the world from World Animal Protection Project manager and veterinarian Dr. Daniel C. Ventura, I was outraged.

Right now stray dogs are trembling in fear and howling in agony because of cruel dog population management practices. They are being shot, gassed and poisoned. Dr. Ventura shared with me the story of a small puppy who survived the gas chamber in a shelter in the Philippines. In shock and shaking violently, the puppy was grabbed and thrust back into the chamber only to be gassed again. I had to ask Dr. Ventura to stop as he described the sound of his agonizing howls. I kept picturing my own dogs. I felt sick.

What happened to this puppy is horrible and it’s repeated all around the world. But you can make the world a better, safer place for all dogs. You can help stop their pain, just like you would do for any animal.

There are solutions, dogs don’t have to suffer. World Animal Protection is a leader in developing and implementing dog population management programs that will save the lives of millions of dogs around the world. With your support today we can reach our goal to improve the lives of 50 million dogs across 25 countries.

Your gift of $25, $50, or $100 or more can help us promote dog population management practices that don’t harm dogs like: education, sterilization, vaccination, registration and identification.

Don’t let another minute go by without taking action to save the lives of these defenceless animals – please give as generously as you can.

Rescued moments from death

Dear Bellanger,

I would like to tell you the story of Pam, a six month old puppy that we saved from certain death on Epi Island as part of our life-saving response to Cyclone Pam. Lying on the grass, labouring with each breath, I’ve never seen an animal that close to death. It was heartbreaking.

Dehydrated, malnourished and barely able to lift her head, I wasn’t sure that Pam would make it. Our vets went to work immediately – determined to save her life. After injecting her with glucose and hand-feeding her water with a syringe, we could slowly see the life returning to her eyes.

You helped save Pam – thousands more animals still need your help!Without you, we simply would not be able to help dogs like Pam or any other animal in critical need. But, we still need your help to protect animals in the aftermath of Cyclone Pam and in other disasters around the world. Please donate now. Thanks to our generous supporters, Pam made it through the night and was sitting upright and wagging her tail the next morning. We visited Pam twice since and worked with her owner to help him continue caring for her. I hope that you will take a few minutes to watch our video of Pam’s story and see how your support can make the difference in the life of an animal in crisis.

Celebrate your love for animals this Easter

Spring is in the air!

It’s that time of the year, when we shed our winter coats and open our doors and windows to let the sunshine in. And for some farm animals, it’s time to throw open the barn doors and graze in the fresh air after months in hay-filled barns. But, they are the lucky ones. Billions of hens remain confined to cages and they sadly will never get to feel warm sunlight or a fresh spring breeze.

But you can help unlatch cages for hens.

Whether you are celebrating Easter next week or simply enjoying the welcomed warmer weather, World Animal Gifts are a great way to mark the occasion.  Your gift will bring joy and hope to egg-laying hens across Canada, who are kept in cramped cages. Let’s make the world a better place for the people and animals you love.

Vanuatu's animals need you

March/mars 2015

Vanuatu’s animals need you / Les animaux du Vanuatu ont besoin de vous

We’re nearing the end of March, which means food is running out for both people and animals in Vanuatu. Cyclone Pam’s devastating effects are still being fully assessed and addressed by our disaster management team as they make their way across the archipelago. But we are sure about one thing: animals desperately need your help. Please give to secure critical medicine and veterinary supplies, food and shelter for all the animals affected by this disaster.
Please donate

Urgent: food supplies are critically low

Dear Bellanger,

Our emergency rescue teams are on the ground in Vanuatu protecting animals after the destruction of Cyclone Pam. Hundreds of thousands of animals have been impacted by the storm and I hope I can count on you to help them. With winds reaching 250 km/hour, the cluster of 80 islands that make up the nation of Vanuatu suffered “unprecedented damages”…the full extent of which we still don’t know.

I’m proud to say that World Animal Protection is the first International animal welfare organization in Vanuatu, helping the many animals who are hungry, injured and without shelter. We’re cooperating with the National Disaster Management Office, working alongside International Humanitarian agencies, local veterinarians and animal groups. Our priority is providing immediate veterinary care, shelter, food and clean water.

Urgent funding is needed

Local government officials are saying that food for both people and animals will run out before the end of March. We must act now to help animals in distress.

As one of our valued supporters, I’m hoping that you can you make an urgent emergency gift and help ensure that food doesn’t run out for animals caught in this devastating disaster?

Whether it’s farm animals or family pets these communities depend on their animals.

  • $45 will provide live-saving feed for 5 farm animals for a week
  • $85 will provide critical first-aid for 6 animals
  • $144 will provide emergency medical treatment for 4 animals

By making an emergency gift today, you will be protecting animals and the people who rely on them to survive.

Thank you once again for coming to the rescue of these vulnerable animals.

Sincerely,

Urgent: help animals in Vanuatu caught in Cyclone Pam

Vanuatu Disaster

Donate now

Dear Bellanger,

I urgently need your help.

On Friday, March 13th at 7pm local time what is being described as a “once in a lifetime” storm Cyclone Pam – made landfall on the South Pacific Island of Vanuatu leaving devastation in its wake. Over an estimated 100,000 people have been affected, struggling to find shelter, food and water.

And as you know these events are catastrophic for the animals as well. We are already hearing initial reports through the United Nations of unprecedented damage to the country’s farm animal sector indicating that “small livestock, including chickens and pigs have been killed, and pens and shelters destroyed.”

“Animals are important to the people in Vanuatu like everywhere else. They love their pets and more than most places, depend on livestock for transportation, economic and food security. We are focused on helping animals with urgent needs as well as protecting entire communities.” — Steven Clegg, Disaster Response Team Leader, Asia Pacific

Please, can you donate now and help animals caught in this devastating disaster?

Our disaster response team is on its way to Vanuatu to assess the damage and help the animals that have been injured or left without shelter, access to clean water or food. We anticipate that pets will need veterinary care, shelter and food. Most local farms would not have been prepared to handle a disaster of this magnitude. Working with local veterinarians and agriculture officials will be important to help the animals with the greatest need.

By making a gift today, you will be helping animals caught in the path of destruction and will allow our team to act quickly to bring immediate relief to animals in crisis.

I will be sending updates once our team hits the ground…any amount you could give today will help our efforts.

Thank you for standing with the animals in times of disaster.

Sochi Bears

90_cmyk.png Help save the Sochi bears

Dear Bellanger,

Imagine being kept in cruel captivity your entire life. Living in a filthy, cramped cage, littered with garbage and treated as entertainment for patrons of the restaurant you live behind…even forced to drink beer. Instead of grass and earth beneath their paws, home is a barren concrete bunker behind a steel fence. This has been the plight of two bears in Sochi, Russia.

World Animal Protection has stepped in to respond to a desperate appeal to save these two bears, named Pascha and Misha, but we need your help.

ACT NOW

Please sign and share the petition to free the two defenceless bears. Over 25,000 supporters around the globe have already signed the petition – add your voice today!

We are working with Big Hearts Foundation to bring them to the World Animal Protection funded Romanian Bear Sanctuary but we first need the local authorities to take the bears somewhere safe away from this misery, squalor and abuse. We are petitioning Ministry of Natural Resources in the region to give active assistance to help facilitate the movement of the bears from Sochi to the new home that has been arranged for them in Romania.
DONATE NOW TO GIVE BEARS A NEW LIFE
Pasha and Misha’s story is not unique. Since 2005, 89 bears have been given new lives at the Romanian Bear Sanctuary. Please donate now and help us to rescue and care for bears and end years of cruelty and suffering.

  • $32 could feed two bears for a week
  • $64 could provide both bears the essential vet care they will need upon arriving at the sanctuary
  • $108 would provide 4 months of maintenance to freshwater pools, allowing these bears to swim and play for the first time.

We are so grateful for all you do for the animals without you, we would not be able to act quickly to rescue animals in need.

And thank you for taking action today to help give these animals a chance of a better life.

Help us end the cruel butchering
of dolphins

Photo

Donate now

Dear Bellanger,

Imagine, throwing a ball to an adorable, playful dolphin. The dolphin brings back your ball and then you harpoon it! Dreadfully, this is what is happening to the Boto dolphin or ‘Amazon pink river dolphin’ as it is fondly described because of its pink skin. Their tender dolphin flesh is used for baiting Piracatinga, an abundant species of scavenger catfish. This has to stop. By giving now you can help save the boto dolphins from being tortured and killed each year.

During one of these brutal hunts, a single dolphin, or even an entire family of dolphins, are attracted with playful balls, caught with nets and pierced by harpoons to immobilize them. But instead of being killed right away, the fatally injured dolphin is tied by its tail to a submerged tree until the next fishing trip.

For hours, and even days, the wounded and terrified dolphin struggles to free itself from its tether before it gives up or is crudely butchered.

And the worst part? The demand for Piracatinga fish is growing, which puts boto dolphins at an even higher risk for torture. But your gift today can help save boto dolphins by givingWorld Animal Protection the necessary resources to be a #BotoWatchdog.

With your help, we can gain support by revealing this cruelty to communities who consume Piractinga and convince governments to stop its commercialization.

Thank you for your generous support.

Tiger selfies: Best Thing I Never Had / Autophotos avec les tigres

Beyoncé’s recent photo taken during her trip to Thailand is a stark reminder that our work is not done to educate tourists about the cruelty of animal entertainment. Forcibly removed from their mothers, fed artificially by tourists and confined to tiny cages – no part of this resembles the tigers’ natural lives in the wild. Would you still take part if you knew? Help us expose the truth Before They Book.
Help us
